Rev. Jacob Hartzler

The Rev. Jacob Hartzler, noted as a theologian, editor and one of the first American 
missionaries in Japan, died in York Jan. 1, of old age.  He was 83 years old and served 60 
years in the ministry.

Dr. Hartzler, for a number of years, was editor of the Evangelical Messenger at Cleveland, 
Ohio, and later was superintendent of the Evangelical missions in Japan, with headquarters at 
Tokio.  He was the oldest living minister in point of service of the United Evangelical church.
