His wife, Margaret, returning from the home of Eugene Stabley, where she had been working for the day, found his body lying on the kitchen floor, his head on a pillow, and a tube from the gas cock in his mouth. According to Coroner L. U. ZECH, death was due to suicide by means of illuminating gas. Hoffman, a former laundryman of town, but who had not been actively engaged in business for some time, had been drinking heavily of late, it is understood. On Memorial day, according to neighbors, he and a neighbor, both of whom had been drinking, had a quarrel that led to the exchange of blows. They were seen in combat, rolling about on the ground. When found, Hoffman's face was badly swollen, evidence of the battle, and a cursory examination indicated that his nose had been broken. He leaves his wife Margaret, and the following brothers and sisters: Harris, John and Samuel, of Harrisburg; Will of Steelton and Mrs. D. H. Wise, Mrs. Charles Hartzel and Mrs. Elizabeth Watson, all of Harrisburg. After the discovery of his body, Mrs. Hoffman summoned Dr. C. W. Frey, who pronounced the man dead for several hours. Dr. Frey notified the county coroner, who came here and issued the death certificate after an investigation. The funeral will be held Monday, with services conducted at the house at 11 a.m. by Rev. S. L. Hench, pastor of Christ Lutheran church. Interment will be made in the Union cemetery, this place. Funeral Director Purd A. Riedel of the W. F. Glatfelter company, has charge of the arrangements. The Gazette And Daily - Saturday, June 01, 1929
