All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/york/ _______________________________________________ DEATH OF MICHAEL HOKE Well-Known Retired Business Man Dies in His 76th Year Michael Hoke, a well-known retired business man and a highly-esteemed citizen, died Monday evening at 5 o’clock at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Smith, No. 317 Broadway. He has been an invalid for the past year, but only seriously ill for four weeks, from a complication of diseases. He was aged 75 years, 10 months and 22 days. The deceased was a son of Michael and Annie (Martin) Hoke and was born near Spring Grove. As a young man he came to Hanover and learned the machinest’s trade with the late Samuel Fitz. Later he entered into the grain, coal and –ime business, on Broadway, in which he was engaged for about 40 years, retiring in 1911. The deceased was married in 1865 to Miss Harriet Reed, of Conowago Township, Adams county, who died nearly three years ago. From this union six children survive: Mrs. H. A. Smith, of Broadway; Mrs. William Ray, Philadelphia; Mrs. Samuel Yingling, Greencastle; Paul Hoke, Broadway; John Hoke, Chambersburg, and Edward M. Hoke, Pittsburgh. There are also six grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Samuel Heiges, of Broadway, also survives. Mr. Hoke was an active and consistent member of Emmanuel Reformed Church and at various times was an Elder and Deacon in the church and for many years was a member of the choir. He was one was also a member of McAllister over Lodge No. 327, I. O. O. F., and a charter member of McAllister Council No. 980, Royal Arcanum. Mr. Hoke served a nine months enlistment in Co. F 166th Pennsylvania Militia during the Civil War and was First Corporal of the Company under the late Capt. Jeremiah Kohler, of Hanover. He was a Democrat in politics and served in the Borough Council in 1888 and 1889. Funeral Thursday morning, Oct. 12th, services at the house at 10:30 o’clock, Rev. Abner S. Dechant officiating.
