McCURDY Alexander Carson McCURDY, one of the oldest and best known citizen of Peach Bottom township, died at his residence near Slate Ridge, on Friday, aged 85 years. He had been an active man and retained his faculties of mind and powers of body till a few years ago, when a rheumatic affection disqualified him for the active duties of life and resulted in a general breaking down of the system. His funeral took place at Slate Ridge under the auspices of Esdrawlon Lodge, A. F. & A. M. of which he was a member. Services were conducted by Rev. J.D. Smith assisted by Revs. Geo. M. Slaysman, Obrum and McKuish. The Lodge conducted the services at the grave, their ritual and ceremonies being very impressive. J.W. Stanley was undertaker. The pallbearers were brother masons, E. ARNOLD, E.W. EVANS, J. O. STERNS, W.O. HERRMAN, H.R. LLOYD, G. G. JEFFERY. A. C. McCURDY was the son of James and Martha (HEPBURN) McCURDY, natives of county Derry, Ireland, and was born May 12, 1805, his funeral being on the 85th anniversary of his birth. In 1807 or 8 he emigrated with his parents to this country being located for a time in Lancaster county, Pa., but in 1813 was brought by his parents to Peach Bottom, York county, where he resided the remainder of his life, 77 years. In his young manhood he worked in the Old Big Quarry. Later on he taught school also burned lime at the river, afterward purchasing the farm near Slate Ridge. He was a thought-reader and a man of more than ordinary intelligence. He served Peach Bottom township in various positions, and in 1850-51 represented York County with credit in the Pennsylvania Legislature. In 1831 he was married to Miss Mary Ann TURNER, of Harford county, who died in 1875. There were born to them 13 children, 4 of whom survive: Dr. W. C. McCURDY, Madonna, Harford county, Dr. A. C. McCURDY, Towson, Md., Mrs. A. R. STREET, Peach Bottom township and Mrs. Asa JONES, Delta. He was named after Rev. Alex Carson celebrated Baptist preacher and theological writer, who had been a Presbyterian and then an Independent. Mr. McCURDY was the last child he baptized, shortly before leaving the Presbyterian fold. ------ DIED McCURDY - On Friday, May 9th, at his residence in Peach Bottom township, Alexander C.
