She was the mother of 12 children. Six are dead, and the following reside at this place: William, and Daniel, at home; Charles, at his home of Main street; Lizzie on Broad street, and John and Laura, in York. Mrs. Roland was born and raised in York, and after her marriage to Daniel Roland, of Reading, Pa., they moved out into the country and lived in and around Emigsville all her life. During the war in 1863 her husband was drafted into service and had to leave his wife and five young children, all alone in a small house one and one-half miles east of this place, in a very lonely spot, surrounded by woods. At this time the Rebels had invaded this town, in fact about 3,000 had camped in Emigsville in a woods on the hill, in and around this place. This band went out in every direction foraging, and some were intoxicated. Mrs. Roland was of course frightened and left her home with her little children and came for safety to Emigsville. On the way some 20 men of Earley's army, met her and questioned her, asking: "Where is your husband?" "Why are you leaving your home?" "Do you know we will burn down your house sooner, if it was unoccupied, than if you lived there?" They left her go and she came safely through the Rebel lines to friends in this village. After the war Mr. Roland returned and the family moved to Emigsville and lived here ever since. Ellen Roland was a consistent Christian and a member of the United Brethren church. She is survived by 32 grandchildren, and 43 great grandchildren. The funeral will be held on Saturday, at 2 p.m., at the house. **************************************************************************************************** From The Gazette, York, PA, 1919: Emigsville, June 30. - The funeral of Mrs. Ellen Roland was held from her home in Emigsville, Saturday afternoon, at 2 o'clock.
