SHULTZ Was One of Hanover’s Best Known and Highly Respected Citizens John P. Shultz, one of Hanover’s venerable and well-known business men passed to The Great Beyond at his late home, No. 135 Carlisle St., at an early hour Sunday morning. He was 65 years, 6 months and 27 days. The deceased has been an invalid the past fourteen years but had only been confined to his bed during the past week and even then his physicians did not deem his condition serious until shortly before death. Mr. Shultz was a son of the late William and Henrietta (Bange) Shultz, and was born in Hanover, September 26, 1850. In early life he assisted his father who was one of the pioneer harness makers and saddlers, which trade he followed for a few years. In 1876 he succeeded his father-in-law, the late Simon Slagle in the grocery business at the stand now occupied by Herman Teaman, Carlisle street, and in which the Ehrhart-Conrad Co. was founded. Twenty-three years ago he moved his place of business to the property he erected as a store and residence No. 135 Carlisle Street. In 1893 on account of the increasing trade, the store was moved to the present location on the opposite of the street. Mr. Shultz was one of the pioneers in the grocery business, which through his rugged honesty, fair-dealing and courtesy, developed into one of the leading grocery stores which enjoy a large patronage. The business has been conducted under the management of his son, William S. Shultz, assisted by a younger son, George Shultz, for a number of years. A life long member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran church he also served as deacon in the Council for a period of eight years and was a teacher in the Sunday school for many years until ill health compelled him to resign his position. He was a charter member of McAllister Council No. 980, Royal Arcanum, a member of Friendly Circle No. 19, brotherhood of America since becoming of age and became affiliated with Hanover Lodge No. 227, I. O. O. F., March 27, 1872 and retained his membership until the time of his death. Mr. Shultz was married May 11, 1873 to Miss Emma Slagle, daughter of the late Simon and Parmelia (Gitt) Slagle, who survives, with the following children: Mrs. Theodore Sheetz, of Park Avenue; Howard L. Shultz, at home; Mrs. Sharon M. Smith, of Carlisle Street; Mrs. Calvin Hershey, of Ridge Avenue; William S. Shultz, of Franklin St.; Mrs. G. Guy Hollinger, of Fourth Street; Mrs. Frank Carna, of Carlisle Street; Mrs. Harry Houck, of Baltimore Street; Mrs. George Eckman, of Academy Street; George F. Shultz, of Park Avenue, and Paul ? Shultz, of Third Street. There are also 18 grandchildren surviving. W. Clinton Shultz, of Baltimore Street, is an only brother of the deceased. Funeral, Wednesday, April 26th, at 2. p.m., services at the house, Rev. A. M. Heilman of St. Matthew’s Lutheran church officiating, interment on the family lot in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
