Smyser, of Brooklyn, were interred yesterday at York. Mr. Smyser was a mechanical engineer and invented the coffee packing and sugar packing machines, which have enabled the Arbuckles to wage war on the Sugar Trust. It is said that $500,000 was paid to Mr. Smyser for his invention. It was about seven years ago when his invention was completed, and the Arbuckles began to put out their coffee in one-pound packages. This innovation revolutionized the trade. The machine takes up square flaps of cardboard, shapes them into boxes, seals the ends, weighs the contents and puts them in proper shape for packing. The capacity of the first machine was twenty-three packages a minute, but since then they have been improved. In the big war between the Sugar Trust and the Arbuckles it is said that these machines give the latter a good advantage. Mr. Smyser, since the sale of his patents, has been permanently employed by the Arbuckles. Evening Herald, Hanover, York County, PA, Wednesday, March 15, 1899
