C., on Sunday. Mrs. Henrietta Stair, widow of the late Daniel F. Stair, one of Hanover’s pioneer school teachers and a highly respected woman, passed to the “Great Beyond” at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. L. Whiting, in Washington, D. C., at an early hour Sunday morning, following a brief illness from infirmities. She was in her 85th year. The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stroman, of York, where she was born and her childhood days were spent. When but a young girl, Miss Stroman came to Hanover and engaged in teaching in the public schools. About sixty-three years ago she was married to Daniel F. Stair, and with the exception of the past several years all of her married life was spent in Hanover. After the death of her husband in 1902, she continued housekeeping at her residence on Frederick street, until four years ago, when she sold the property to H. O. Sheppard, and went to Washington to make her home with her daughter Mrs. May Whiting. Mrs. Stair during all her life had an active mind and being a great reader possessed a fund of information on any subject. She was a devoted mother, a charitable neighbor and she had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. During her earlier life Mrs. Stair was actively interested in church work, and served as a teacher in the primary department of St. Mark’s Lutheran Sunday school for many years. A large number of men and women owe a great deal to their lives to her teaching and the influence of her exemplary Christian character. Her life was one well spent and during the years of fruition appeared most beautiful at its close. Mrs. Stair leaves the following children: Mrs. Charles W. Hamm, of York street; Mrs. B. M. Wentz, of Frederick street; Mrs. W. L. Whiting, of Washington, D. C.; Harry Stair of Rochester, N. Y.; Warren Stair of Fall River, Mass. And Malcolm Stair of Bridegport, Conn. There are also 18 grandchildren and 8 great- grandchildren surviving. The remains were brought to Hanover over the Pennsylvania railroad at 3:50 p.m. and were taken in charge by Charles Nugent, funeral director and removed to the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. W. Hamm No. 5 York street. Funeral Tuesday, Jan. 18th, services at the house at 2 p.m., Rev. George W. Nicely, of St. Mark’s Lutheran church, of which the deceased was a devoted member for many years, officiating. Interment on the family lot in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
