D. 1, listed missing at sea, lost life when Liberty ship struck mine in English Channel. Mrs. Stewart Stokes, Red Lion R. D. 1, has been notified by telegram that her husband, Stewart Stokes, seaman, first class, USNR, was killed at sea on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 1944, when his liberty ship struck a mine in the English Channel. The ship was on her way to France when she struck the mine and exploded, the widow has learned. Seaman Stokes and 17 other men had reached their lifeboat when the explosion went off, killing them all. The last letter received by Mrs. Stokes was written the day before, on Nov. 22. Seaman Stokes was inducted into service May 8, 1944, and received boot training at Camp Peary, Norfolk, VA and Brooklyn, N.Y. He want to sea Sept. 10. He leaves his wife, the former Mary Kline, and a daughter, Nelda Van; his father C. Russell Stokes, Delta R. D. 2; a brother, Pvt Gerald Stokes, training at FortKnox, Ky., and a sister, Mrs. Paul Hoffmaster, High Rock R. D. 1. Before induction he was employed as a lineman for the Broadway Maintenance Corp., New York, N.Y. Publication Unknown
