Welsh William Henry Welsh, a native of York, and son of Henry Welsh, years ago one of the proprietors of the York Gazette, died in New York city on Wednesday. He graduated from Princeton in 1847 and studied law in the office of Simon Cameron. In 1853 he became an attache at the court of St. James, as private secretary of the Legation. A notable incident of his stay was his appearance at the Queen's drawing room in March, 1854, with Minister Ruchanan. Both wore the ordinary black clothes prescribed for evening wear at the time rather than the plush and velvet court costumes, and great was the talk thereat. In 1855 he was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate and remained until 1861, being for one term the presiding officer. In 1863 he founded the Philadelphia Age, afterwards the Philadelphia Times. In 1876, he became the owner of the Baltimore Gazette, and in 1884 went to Washington, where he lived until the death of his wife, a year ago. He was aged 77 years. Deceased was a cousin of the late George W. and W. C. W. Welsh, of this place, and of Mrs. Agnes Spangler, of Baltimore street. Evening Herald, Hanover, PA, December 5, 1903
