Florence "Ruth" was the only child of Joel and Nellie Prosser Watrous, born in 
Westerly, Rhode Island 14 October 1896.  Her mother died several days later of 
peurperal fever and her father married three years later to the widow Helen 
Merrill Lamberg.  
Joel died 15 February of 1900, leaving Ruth an orphan at age 3.  She was raised 
by relatives in the Quakertown section of Ledyard, Connecticut. At age 21 she 
married Samuel A. Whipple who died six years later after being struck by a car. 
She later married William R. Stark, who survived her.
She had 9 children, 3 dying in infancy.
The photo was taken at the old Joe Morgan farm, which bordered the reservoir in 
Ledyard on Sandy Hollow Road. The farm no longer exists but other photos taken 
there reveal a large house and many outbuildings on cleared land.
