The photo was taken at the Old Joe Morgan farm which bordered the reservoir in 
Ledyard, Connecticut. Ruth was the name she went by her entire life.  She was 
born at Westerly in October 14,1896, only child of Joel and Nellie Prosser 
Watrous. Days later mother Nellie died and February 15, 1900 her father Joel 
died, leaving her orphaned at age 3. She was raised by relatives and resided 
most of her life at Ledyard and Center Groton, Connecticut but also spent some 
time in New London.
As a young adult she was an active volunter in the Salvation Army and spent 
time in New York City in that capacity.  She returned and married at age 21, to 
Samuel Archie Whipple, son of Samuel Austin and Sarah "Annie" Crouch Whipple 
and native of Ledyard. He died 6 years later when he was struck by a car on the 
New London bridge.  She married about a year later to William Russell Stark, 
who survived her. He was son of John Lawrence and Sophia Salina McKnight Stark, 
born at Waddington, New York.
She was a short woman, never reaching 5 feet tall.  She enjoyed reading and 
writing, especially writing poetry to and for rogerene1@snet.nether 
children.    
She had 9 children, 3 dying in infancy.  Her death occured as a result of a 
stroke on January 25, 1952.  She was buried at Quakertown Cemetery in Ledyard, 
now called Ledyard Union in the newer section which was land donated by her 
grandfather Charles Watrous.
