All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ri/rifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Kathy Mills ke6pxx@yahoo.com April 13, 2010, 1:10 pm Source: Transcription Of Copy Of Original Document Written: November 25, 1789 WILL OF WILLIAM MERRISS transcribed by Dorothy Mansfield In the name of God Amen This seventeenth day of November Ang 1789 I William Merriss of the town of Newport and the county of Newport and now residing in (Exeter Cooper) being in good health and sound disposal of mind Thanks be to God for it Therefore calling to mind the mortality of body that it is appointed one for all (must die) I do make and ordain this my last will and testament that......say (principal) and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the hands of God that gave it me and my body unto the earth...........Buried in a decent manner at the discretion of my executor..............hereafter named and as touching such worldly estate as whatever it hath pleased the Lord to bless me with I give devise and dispose of in the following manner First of all I desire that my just debts and funeral charges be paid out of my estate by me executors. Item. I give and bequeath to my beloved son Ellery Merriss ten shillings in lawful silver money to be paid by me executors. Item. I give an bequeath unto my well beloved daughter Isabel Fish ten shillings in lawful silver money to be paid by my executors. Item. I give and bequeath to my well beloved daughter Elizabeth Merriss ten shillings in lawful silver money to be paid by my ececutors. Item. I give and bequeath to my well beloved daughter Mary Rathburn ten shillings in lawful silver money to be paid out of my estate and also I give and bequeath unto my three sons: John Merriss, Edward Merriss and Ellery Merriss all my wearing apparel to be equally divided between them. Item. I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Mary Merriss the home. I likewise constitute make and ordain my sole..........executors of this my last will and testament all the rest of my movable estate both goods and chattels......that is not already disposed of in this will, I give unto my well beloved wife Mary Merriss to dispose of to her children as she shall think just when she is done with it and I do hereby.......disalow revoke and disannul all and every other former (testament) and will. I declare this to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I have set my hand seal the twenty fifth day of November 1789. signed William Merriss In the presence of-- John Richmond Edward Richmond .......ah (Lawton Junr. John Richmond and Edward Richmond two of the witnesses............. (It appears that William named John and Edward Richmond as his executors, the will is so difficult to read, and some areas impossible to read, that we can't be sure.)
