Seal & Sign, was discovered the be on fire, and in spite of all the efforts to arrest the flames, it was soon entirely consumed. In the building was a fine lot of carriages and buggies, and alot of metallic and other coffins. The loss of these gentlemen will amount to several thousand dollars, and will be severly felt by them. But for the large rains and favorable state of the wind, the destruction of this building would have involved a wide - spread conflagration. By great efforts in the liberal application of water and wet blankets, the adjacent building of Mrs. Hughey, known as the "Abbeville Hotel," was saved from taking fire, as also was DuPre's Hotel and other buildings on the east side of the Public Square. On the same night an attempt was also made, without success, to fire the stables of Wm. H. Parker, Esq. The dampness of the straw prevented the fire from kindling, and the incendiary was driven off before he could accomplish his work. His tracks were distinctly visible the next morning."
