Jan. 25, 1854 ----------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, NOVEMBER 23, 1854 DESPERATE BATTLE WITH A DEER Not long since, two little boys, sons of J.F. CRAWFORD of this District, one seven years of age and the other nine years of age, were returning from school when they were fiercely pounced upon by a tame buck roaming at large over the county. The first attack was upon the younger boy who stood his ground with the resolution of a Camisard; the older one in the meantime was coming to his assistance. The little fellows after a few passes, however, discovered to their dismay that the long horns and sharp feet of the enraged deer were very dangerous weapons, and the one first attacked was quickly hurled to the ground exhausted and bleeding. The maddened animal then turned upon the other who urged his little brother to seize the opportunity and make his escape across a neighboring fence. He sprang for it with his remaining strength, and was in the act of leaping over when he was again set upon and received a deep wound in his back. At this moment, a negro man coming up, rescued the young combatants from their perilous situation, and they were carried home bruised and bleeding from head to foot. Besides the wound in the back of the younger brother, the older one had received a horn in his mouth which penetrated the cheek near the ear, producing an ugly gash. Their clothing, even to their socks, were stripped off of them in shreds. ------------- MARRIAGES Married on Tuesday evening, Nov. 14th by Rev. James Moore, Mr. James A. CALDWELL of Cass county, Georgia to Miss Sarah A. MAGER, of Anderson District, South Carolina. ------- OBITUARY DIED, in Abbeville District at the residence of his brother-in-law Rev. W.H. Davis, on the 23rd ult., Edward Randolph MORAGNE, youngest son of Isaac MORAGNE, deceased, aged 19 years. He was about finishing his academic course with the view of entering college this fall, but in one short week, was hurried to the grave. And such is life! "Man is a transient fading flower, that even in blossoming dies." The remembrance of one so gentle and affectionate, so guileless and trustworthy, will be pleasant tho' mournful to the memory of those who knew him well. In his life, conversation and manners, he was remarkable for purity and simplicity which are too seldom seen in this corrupting world; it is not known to his friends that he ever uttered a profane or vulgar word. In his last moments, his patient endurance and lovely submission endeared him still more to the mourning hearts around him. He had not previously made an open profession of piety; but it was apparent that the teachings of his pious mother had not been lost upon his serious and reflecting mind. He received the consolations of religion with a simple and childish fondness. Nearly his last breath was spent in an earnest desire for that "eternal life" described to him as a state of immortal rest and happiness. The solemn and interesting scenes of his dying hour will not easily be forgotten by the many who witnessed it, so calm, so rational, so free from earthly wishes, it seemed indeed, "quite on the verge of Heaven." ----------- RANAWAY Ranaway from the owner James SMITH, in Anderson District, a negro boy BOB, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, black complexion, medium size, weight about 160 pounds. Robert DUNN, Andrew DUNN, Administrators, January 4, 1855 --------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, JULY 12, 1855 OBITUARY Departed this life on the 24th ult., in the 48th year of her age, Mrs. Martha HILL, consort of Rev. W.P. HILL, of Greenwood, Abbeville District, South Carolina. Few individuals possessed as many excellencies of character as the subject of this notice. All those natural virtues which adorn the female character, seemed to unite in her. Added to these were the graces of the Holy Spirit, which, blended with her natural qualities, rendered her not only an amiable female but likewise a humble and devoted Christian. Truly, she was "adorned with a meek and quiet spirit, which in the sight of God, is of great price." The possession of these virtues qualified her for the performance of the serveral duties arising from the relations of life, as daughter, wife, mother, sister, friend. These duties she discharged in such manner as to secure the confidence and esteem of all who knew her. Yea, of her, it might be said, "she had not an enemy." Her kind and affable manner gained her friends, her prudence and fidelity retained them. The kind attentions which the citizens of the community in which she had lived fifteen years, bestowed upon her during her late illness, gave evidence of the high respect which they entertained for her. These were gratefully appreciated by her, as she expressed to the writer and others. To her husband she was indeed a helpmeet, not only in his domestic engagements but also in his ministerial vocation. And her three children now know and feel that they have lost a mother. For more than twenty-two years she was a consistent member of the Baptist church, enjoying a lerge portion of personal piety and exerting a holy influence by her placid disposition; her punctual attendance on religious exercises, her pious conversation, and her uniform deportment. Her last illness furnished an oaccasion of putting to the test the genuineness of her piety and the sincerity of her profession. Attacked violently with that painful and alarming disease, Dysentary, which in her case baffled the skill of physicians and the power of medicine, her sufferings were indeed intense, yet not a murmur escaped her lips. The writer of this brief tribute of respect, conversed with her with regard to her future prospect, and on one occasion remarked "it is necessary that we should make outselves familiar with death, as that we may always be ready, and not be alarmed at its approach." To which she replied, " I have long ago put my trust in God and feel entirely resigned to his will, and ready to depart whenever he may call me away. Christ is precious to me as a Savior." For twelve days she bore her sufferings with great fortitude, her confidence in God growing stronger daily. The chief anxiety she manifested was to see her husband who was absent on ministerial duties, and who was enabled to return in time to witness the fortitude with which she bore her sufferings, to converse with her upon her preparations for death, and hear the exhortations she addressed individually to her children, to meet her in Heaven. For, she said " I am going there." About the rising of the sun on the morning of the Lord's day, the happy spirit of our dear sister took its flight from its earthly house up to that "building not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." She has left a husband and three children, a mother, sisters and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her decease. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them."
