H. MOSS, died in the town of Corinth, Tishomingo county, Mississippi on the 22nd ult., at the advanced age of 117 years. The Corintian Pillar says he was a remarkably obedient and polite negro, as all attest who knew him; and as an evidence of his good conduct, he was never chastised in his life. He had remarkable powers of endurance, was a fine carpenter and bult a large frame dwelling for Mr. Moss at the advanced age of 114 years. He has during the present summer drawn between three and four hundred shingles a day and had frequently walked to Corinth a distance of two miles, after a hard days' work, to supply himself with sugar and coffee for the month. He was never sick in his life nor did he ever take a dose of medicine. --------- MARRIAGES Married on the 14th inst., by Rev. H.H. Durant, Dr. G.W. WATSON and Miss Permelia ADAMS, both of this district. ------- OBITUARY DIED, on Friday the 19th of September near Lodi in Abbeville District, Mrs. Louisa HOLLAND, wife of Rev. Dr. Jno. HOLLAND, aged 32 years. She was a native of this district, and at the early age of 14 she became a subject of renewing grace and united with the Presbyterian church at Rock in Oct. 1838, then under the pastoral care of Rev. E. Cater. In a few years she was married to Mr. John WILSON and removed within the bounds of Upper Long Cane church, to which place her membership was transferred. After the death of Mr. WILSON, she returned with her infant daughter to her relatives near Greenwood, and in 1849 she again became a member of Rock church. In the early part of the year 1854, we believe, she was married to Dr. Jno. HOLLAND. About two years after she was called to mourn the loss of an infant son, and her own health, which had for some time been feeble, began to fail more rapidly. It was apparent to her Christian friends that those graces of the Spirit implanted within her, were vigorous and active, and that she was fast ripening for Heaven. She was possessed of a lovely and amiable spirit and piety which gave beauty and refinement to all the accomplishments that nature and art had endowed her with. For several months before she died, her sufferings were severe, but she found that the grace of God was sufficient for her. She was patient and resigned and at times appeared cheerful and happy as she would speak of her approaching end. In the struggle with death, when asked by her devoted husband if she was happy in the prospect of Heaven, raising both hands, she answered, "perfectly so" and soon her emancipated spirit returned to God who gave it. The loss of one who so well discharged the duties of daughter, sister, wife and mother, is no ordinary trial, but surely the sad hearts of weeping relatives should be comforted with the evidence she has left them of her readiness to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. Meet her in Heaven! In the presence of God in fullness and joy; and at his right hand, there are pleasures forever more. She was a child of an uncommon affectionate disposition, strongly attached to all her school mates and in return, beloved by them all. The day before her death when asked by her mother if she loved God, she answered, "o, yes, he is a sweet, sweet God to me." The morning of her death, she told her mother goodbye on hearing some remark that they thought she was dying, and in a few hours, fell asleep in Jesus. The fond anticipations of her parents have all been blasted, but their loss is her eternal gain. "Alas, how changed that lovely flower, which bloomed and cheered my heart, Fair fleeting comfort of an hour, how soon we're called to part. And shall my bleeding heart arraign, that God, whose ways are love? Or vainly cherish anxious pain, for her, who rests above. ------------ STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, Abbeville District Court of Ordinary Whereas, Irvin HUTCHISON has applied for Letters of Administration on the goods, chattels, rights and credits of Maximilian HUTCHISON, late of said district, deceased; this is to cite all the kindred and creditors of said dec'd to appear at the Court of Ordinary for said district to be held at the Abbeville courthouse on the 3rd day of December next, to show cause, if any, why said administration should not be granted. This 18th day of November, 1856. William Hill, Ordinary of Abbeville District --------- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, NOVEMBER 27, 1856 OBITUARY DIED, in this district on the 7th of October 1856, John Oswell SCOTT, in the thirty-first year of his age. He was a member of Lodimont Presbyterian church and led the life of a retired but humble and consistent Christian. His hope was placed alone in the merit and sufficiency of the Redeemer and the natural fruits, peace and resignation, were experienced. The comforts and supports promised by a covenent keeping God, were realized in his case, and the conviction that for him to die would be gain, upheld him in the hour of dissolution. He left a wife and three children, whom he commended to the care of Him who engages to be the widow's stay and the orphan's help. To them his early departure is a severe loss, which can be compensated only by Him who can educe good out of evil, and who behind a frowning providence, may hide a smiling face. While we mourn not as those who have no hope, still we do mourn the premature death of one whose life was so full of promise to the church and the world. But God has his purposes to effect in all his dealings toward us, and those purposes are holy and wise. ----------- NOTES: There were not any newspapers filmed for DECEMBER 1856 on this microfilm roll. ---------- File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/sc/abbeville/newspapers/newspape81nw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/scfiles/ File size: 23.4 Kb
