In early life he was married to Mrs. Nancy C. Stewart, nee Barton. She having departed this life, leaving him behind with seven children, he was married to Mrs. Mattie A. Spalding, nee Brown, in November, 1872. All the children of his first wife are living, and his last wife, with one sweet little girl (Mattie), are left to mourn their loss. Bro. Flinn was noted for his honesty and faithfulness in dealing with his fellow-man. That due him, he wanted, and what he owed, he took much pleasure in paying. No man, white or black, who labored for him failed to receive his pay, nor was there any complaint because of delay. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, years since, but withdrew for causes known to himself, and remained out of the church for several years. In August, 1886, he came back to the church, pledging himself to God, which pledge he kept to the day of his death. When religiously interrogated he would answer, "I am doing the best I can." His suffering was long; for six months and more he endured the torture of disease that preyed upon his body. For months he hoped to get well, but said, "If it is the Lord's will, I am going." He became more and more spiritual unto the last. He rejoiced in song, joined heartily in prayer, and meekly received the Supper of the Lord. In his last illness he said, "I am as happy as one can be not to shout." Is he shouting now? The Lord bless Sister Flinn, little Mattie and all that are bereft. P. M. Guthrie. Havana, Ala., April 3, 1889. Additional Comments: Submitted by the family of a descendant of Anderson Freeman Flinn and Nancy Caroline Barton Stewart Flinn. Both are buried at Mt.
