Mrs. Hughey owned considerable estate at Abbeville and elsewhere. She was 82 years old, and lived with her nephew W. R. Buchanan, at whose house she committed the rash act. No cause can be assigned except temporary aberration of the mind, caused by ill health from which she frequently suffered of late years. At these times she often threatened to take her life. She had no children. The Evening Index Thu Nov 11, 1897 page 9 Death of Mrs. Hughey Mrs. Elizabeth Hughey, widow of the late William Hughey, died suddenly at the home of her nephew, W. R. Buchanan, last Thursday morning. It was at first thought, and so reported, that she had commited suicide, from a cut on her throat and an open knife near by. That she made the attemp there seems no doubt, but the absence of blood anywhere and the very small gash leads to the conclusion that she died of heart failure, from fright. Mrs Hughey was 72 years old and of late years her health had been very poor. She had been a member of the Methadies church for a great many years. Her remains were carried to Upper Long Cane and buried between those of her husband and mother. Mrs. Hughey's property consisted of mortgages and cash -- how much is not definately known. By the provision of her will, of which G. W. Buchanan is executor, a bequest of $200 is made to the Epworth Orphanage and $100 each to the Thornwell and Connie Maxwell Orphanages, the balance of her estate to be equally divided between her rightful heirs. The will, it is said, is clearly illegal.. Whether the legatees will try to have it set aside or not is not known.
