Old Newspaper Clippings Found In A Bible - Source Not Known, May 10 1910

DEATH OF MR. B.J. MARTIN

Donalds, May 10. - After an illness of more than a year, caused by a cancerous 
affection of the from Mr. B. J. Martin, one of Abbeville county's best 
citizens, died at his home, two miles from Donalds Saturday morning and was 
buried in the Baptist Cemetery here Sunday.  Friends from Anderson, Abbeville, 
Due West and other places braved the inclement weather that they might pay 
this last tribute of esteem to his memory.
 Mr. Martin was 65 years old and a Confederate veteran.  He volunteered in 
1863, and was a gallant member of Co. I, 19th Regiment.  He married Miss 
Elvira Tribble, who died 23 years ago, leaving him with the care of six small 
children, all of who are a living monument to his tender Christian care.  In 
his family he was father, mother and companion.  In his community he was 
recognized as a safe counselor and was always first on any movement for its 
betterment.  He was charitable and generous and gave unstintingly of his means 
and energy.  In the councils of his church he ranked high.  For 20 years he 
held the office of deacon and his liberal unassuring example was the cause of 
success of many noble enterprises in which his church was conspicuous during 
this time.  He was a good man and will be sorely missed.
