Http://scdah.sc.gov/ Written: August 7, 1839 Recorded: January 8, 1840 “Will of Armsted BURT State of South Carolina Edgefield District I Armsted Burt planter of the State and District aforesaid, being sick in body, but of Sound and disposing mind and memory, do make and declare this my last Will and Testament in maner and form following 1st. I Will and bequeth to my Son Francis W. Burt, one Negro girl slave named Harriet and her boy child Phill, with the future increas of said girl 2d. I will and bequeth to my son Henry S. Burt, money sufficient, to be paid from time, to time, as /may/ be prudently, and actually necessary, to defray the expences of carrying him through the Study of medicine, which study he is now pursueing 3d. I Will and bequeth to my son Armsted H. Burt one negro girl slave, named Annah, with the future increas of said girl 4th I will and bequeth to my wife Mary Burt, during her natural life, all the rest, ^ and residue^, of my estate, she to pay off all my Just debts out of the Nett proceeds of the crops made, after supporting herseld and family, but should the crops made, not be sufficient, then my Executors are authorised to sell such property as in their Judgement can be best spared, and at the death of my wife, all my estate by equally divided between my four children, Martha Garrett, Francis, Henry and Armsted Burts, the amoung however expended over and above Seven hundred dollars in giving Henry S. Burt his profsefsion, is to be deducted from his deviden, the expences or advances made him to be computed from the time he commrnced the study of the Languages at green Wood academy 5th I do hereby constitute and appoint my wife Executrix and my son Francis H. Amsted BURT married Mary Ann Jane BAKER, December 19, 1811, probably Edgefield District, South Carolina. Mary Ann Jane BAKER born December 8, 1782, Charlotte County, Virginia, was daughter of James Edward BAKER, born circa 1755, Charlotte County, Virignia, and of his wife, Elizabeth FUQUA, born circa 1762, Charlotte County, Virignia [their family migrated to Edgefield District, South Carolina circa 1785-1790]; she died January 9, 1857, Edgefield County, South Carolina.
