On Saturday night about 10 o'clock a pistol shot was heard on Main Street in front of Mr. B.W. Moseley's store, which was quickly followed by a cry of pain. Policeman Gribben and a number of citizens were quickly on the spot, when it was found that James Parmento had been shot just below the heart by a pistol in the hands of John Scott. Both the parties were young colored men. Scott, who did the shooting, immediately ran through Mr. Moseley's store, ------ pistol under the platform --- the jail, where he asked the jailer to admit him., The jailer refused to admit him without orders, and advised him to return and deliver himself up to one of the police. He immediately turned on his track and ran, calling for the police, until he was finally taken in custody by Policeman Kaney. He showed where he had flung the pistol, and was immediately lodged in jail. It seems that James Parmento the deceased, during the evening had given his little brother ten cents, which was taken away by Scott. This led to a meeting and a quarrel which culminated in a fight. Scott throwing Parmento to the pavement. In the fall Parmento dropped a pistol from his vest pocket, which Scott seized and fired at his adversary, who was only a few feet distant. Parmento died between 12 and 1 o'clock, on Saturday night. On Sunday, Coroner William Harden, impanelled a jury with Mr. Henry Hahn as foreman, who after surveying the corpse adjourned until 10 o'clock Monday for the taking of testimony. Drs. Wyman and Edwards performed the post mortem examination. On Monday the jury assembled and returned a verdict in accordance with the above facts, viz., that James Parmento came to his death by a wound from a pistol in the hands of John Scott.
