James Thompson, a white mountaineer, who had been in the Greenville jail nearly a 
year, awaiting a "speedy trial," died last Friday, and was carried in a wagon to 
his home twenty-five miles distant, accompanied by his wife and children. While he 
was in jail it was proposed to him that he could obtain his liberty by becoming 
informer and telling what he knew about illegal traffic in whiskey; but he 
answered, "I'm a white man; I'll rot here in jail before I'll tell anything I 
know."
