Sloan, who murdered his wife in Newberry on the 19th, spent Monday night at the house of J.T. Bell, in Newberry county, where he had been given an assumed name. After he had left there next morning parties suspected him of being the wife-murderer, and starting in pursuit overtook and surrounded him in a negro cabin on Garlington and Young's plantation, which is in Lauren's county, fourteen miles from Clinton and near the Newberry line. He resisted arrest, and shot himself in the left breast, causing instant death. The only person in the house at the time of the shooting was an old negro woman. The party only heard the report of the pistol, none of them witnessing the shooting.
