A dispatch dated Branchville, S.C., August 19, says that John Johnston, a negro 
man, boarded a through freight train at that place on Monday night and attempted 
to steal a ride to Charleston by getting between the cars. As is usual in such 
cases he fell to the ground and was run over and fatally injured, both legs and 
one are being badly crushed. He died about 4 o'clock the next morning. A jury of 
inquest was held over his body, and it rendered a verdict that he came to his 
death from injuries received while attempting to steal a ride on the care, and 
that his death was the result of his own carelessness.
