All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/sc/scfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Angie Rapids angierapids@gmail.com February 25, 2023, 7:15 pm The Aiken Reporter 11 April 1882 page 3 Marriage of Two Convicts Richard Bates, under sentence of death for arson, to be executed on the 28th inst., and Ann Good, sentenced to two years imprisonment at hard labor in the penitentiary, for grand larceny, were married in the 4th inst., at 5p,m., in the Greenville jail by Colonel Edward Croft. The ceremony took place in the cell of the jail, wherein are confined three others who, with Bates, await the execution of the death sentence on the 27th inst. for the same crime. The pair were allowed to remain together with the other prisoners through the night. On the morning of the 5th the bride was carried to the penitentiary to serve her term of imprisonment, and three weeks from that day the groom foes to the gallows. Both are colored.
