Latitude N34 24.890 x Longitude W82 46.644 CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ My notes for Dr Samuel M BUCHANAN: Found old Buchanan cemetery was out in the country of Anderson County, SC with Elizabeth Salvatore from Atlanta, GA, in September, 2002. Directions: From Anderson, SC, take Hwy 29 S towards Hartwell, GA. After you pass BASF Corp go approx 6.2 miles and turn left onto Latimer Road (right after you pass Todd Fireworks on right). Go down Latimer Road for a ways and just before you get to the end of the road, you will see an old dilapidated barn on the left and a dirt road. Today there was a gray colored trailer and a brick house. Behind the trailer is a stand of overgrown trees and all sorts of briars / weeds that need to be cleared. Documentation says there are 14 or more graves marked only by field stones with no markings as well as the following: Samuel Buchanan d. 10 Mar 1860 - Sgt. SC Militia, War of 1812 William M Buchanan b. Nov 1804 - d. 26 Apr 1884 Elizabeth Buchanan b. 27 Dec 1825 - d. 12 Dec 1890 John O Buchanan b. 24 Jul 18611 - d. 4 Sep 1918 We had extensive conversations with Ms. Latimer, born on the property in 1931. She says that it was Society Land and that her father was renting the property. Then the government stepped in and started selling the property in parcels. She said that before she was born her father bought 110 acres. So it appears that between the time of the last Buchanan burial in 1918 and last 1920's, the land became the property of the government. I tried to do a search on the internet to find out what Society Land stood for but came up empty. by: Theresa Buchanan TOMBSTONE TRANSCRIPTION NOTES: ------------------------------ a. = age at death b. = date-of-birth d. = date-of-death h. = husband m. = married p. = parents w. = wife BUCHANAN, Elizabeth Burriss, b.12-27-1825, d.12-12-1890 BUCHANAN, John O., b.07-24-1861, d.09-04-1918 BUCHANAN, Samuel, b.03-13-1780, d.
