Latitude N 34 46.067 x Longitude W 82 27.594 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ TOMBSTONE TRANSCRIPTION NOTES: ------------------------------ a. = age at death b. = date-of-birth d. = date-of-death h. = husband m. = married p. = parents w. = wife A private graveyard is on the property of C.A.N. Enterprises that is owned by the Crittenden Family. Landscaper's Market operates a Nursery on the property. It was part of James Woodson's property in 1998 and was adjacent to Cooper Road (was called Horseshoe Road) that is the southern extension of Highway 153. It is located across the road from Mr. Randell Woodson's house. Mr. Randell Woodson and James Woodson are now deceased. There are 5 readable gravestones and two graves marked with fieldstones that are visible. I am told there are between 15 to 20 graves in the cemetery, but I could not find them. If they are there, they were probably marked with rocks. A power line runs through the cemetery that keeps the "right of way" relatively clean and gives easy access to the cemetery. The 7 graves I saw were in two rows, five in the first row and two in the second row. First row: 1. Unknown - Fieldstone at head. 2. Unknown - Fieldstone at head and foot. 3. BERRY DURHAM - no dates 4. CLEARER DURHAM - no dates 5. EVELINE DURHAM - b 30 JAN 1824 d 4 OCT 1877 Second row: 1. ALEXANDER BURDEN - b 18 MAY 1844 d 25 MAR 1937 2. JAMES A. WOODSON - son of W.T. & F.M. Woodson b 11 NOV 1871 d 10 JAN 1874 My research shows that the Cemetery was probably a Durham / Woodson cemetery since it was close to the old Durham homeplace (now on Woodson Road) and the Woodson homeplace. The Durham and Woodson families were white and Alexander Burden was considered black. He worked for the Woodsons and was buried in the cemetery 60 years after the others. Census records show the Burden family to be free mulatto. Lowry Wilson NOTES: Berry Durham was on the 1850 US Census as a 22 year old male (Born 1828) living with his 23 year old wife, Jane E. Durham (born 1827) and their 1 year old daughter, Clarrisa (born 1849). They lived next to Berry's 62 year old mother, Clarrisa "Clearer" Durham (born 1788), and 4 of Clearer's unmarried daughters (Berry's older sisters). The 4 sisters were Elizabeth, Mahala, Sarah, and Eveline Durham. Eveline Durham (1824 - 1877) was one of the 4 daughters of Clearer Durham and was Berry Durham's sister. It is known that Anderson Durham and three of his sisters, Elizabeth, Mahala, and Sarah were the last DURHAMs to live on the Durham property on Woodson Road. Apparently, the three sisters never married. Anderson may have married, but he was living with his sisters in their old age. All four are buried at Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery, Powdersville, Anderson County, SC. A legal agreement was made with Mr. James A. Cely for their care and burial in exchange for the property. After their death, Mr. Cely sold the land to the Woodson family.
