CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY:
------------------------

Good Hope Baptist church was organized on August 23, 1932, with 15 persons 
joining the church.  The church met a the old Good Hope School building and on 
December 9, 1933, a lot was secured for the church, and the old Good Hope 
Presbyterian church sold their building to Good Hope for $100.00.  On December 
27, 1933, men of the church began disassembling the old church and moved it to 
the new property where they used it to build a new church.  First services were 
held on April 1, 1934, with the Rev. T.E. Dill being the first pastor of the 
church.  In 1950, Rev. Dill resigned and the church called Rev. Willis E Pruitt, 
under whose leadership the church grew rapidly.  In 1958 a new sanctuary was 
completed that would seat approximately 260 people.  In 1960, Rev. Pruitt 
resigned his pastorate and was succeeded by Rev. Jimmy Gaines.  In 1964, under 
his leadership, an educational plant was added to the present sanctuary.  In 
1965, Rev. Gaines resigned and was succeeded by Rev. Albert Trammel until his 
resignation in 1969.  Rev. Benny Spears was called as the pastor on November 2, 
1969, and served until his resignation March5, 1972.  Rev. Larry Southerland 
served as Interim pastor from March until December 1972.  Rev. Bill Poore 
assumed the pastorate December 31, 1973 and lead the church through some 
exciting times of growth.  Curtis Bundy served as pastor after Billy Poore.  
Rev. Curtis Bundy served for over 20 years and was succeeded by Rev. Tony 
Tilley. Rev. Robbie Garrett assumed the pastorate in 1999 and under his 
leadership the church has now reached a new season of ministry in the Iva 
community with both spiritual and numerical growth.

GOOD HOPE CHURCH HISTORICAL MARKER: 
SC 81, 100
Oldest Presbyterian church in continuous existence in Anderson County. Organized 
in 1789. First pastor, Rev. John Simpson. Congregation worshipped at three sites 
near Generostee Creek, three miles: west of Iva. Old cemetery at third site. 
Sanctuary built in Iva in 1909, 200 yards west of marker.  Erected by Anderson 
County Historical Association-1958
