Latitude N 34 39.195 x Longitude W 82 46.979 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ In the Carolina Room, you will find bits and pieces of information collected by me, in my travels in different Counties in South Carolina. Visit http://members.aol.com/pastense2/scroom.htm In the Carolina Room, I have stored many documents that pertain to the State of South Carolina, however, I do have some records that I have acquired from other States, as well. Here you will find a little bit of my Family History, South Carolina Misc. Records extracted, from (wills, deeds, marriage records, deaths records, probate records) Penitentiary Records, Coroner Inquisitions, Church Cemetery transcriptions where to get copies of these books, pictures, census information, surname connections, Mortality records, Slave records and Mortgage Records. Many of the items in my possession, were copied from the original document and later compiled and placed in one of my many databases, for future reference. Keep in mind, that a lot of hard work has been placed in the years of research that I have done. Most of what you will find here I freely share, with the understanding that it is copyrighted material, published either by me or someone else, that I have acknowledged. The following history information was taken from the Inventory of Church Archives of Churches 1935. By: Emile E. Vaughn Kings Chapel A.M.E. High Street Organized 1871 1st 1871 - 1873 in private home about 300 yards west of present site; 2nd 1873 - 1889 in store room in town. Dedicated in 1892 and built in 1889 wooden frame 38 X 48, bell and belfry, plain square doors and windows, vestibule entrance. Capacity 325. Value of building $3400, value of parsonage $100, value of grounds $300, total value of church property $4800.00. Oldest grave marker 1872. First settled clergy Rev. Silas H. Jefferson, tenure 1871 - 1888. Charter members 22, present membership 161. This church is the mother church of Bethel Methodist (Colored). It's organization was precipitated by the refusal of the Pendleton Methodist Church (White) to "funeralize" a colored negro. The colored immediately organized this church. o----------o While it was common practice for Blacks to be members of Pendleton's churches - galleries were built in some churches and in some cases the Blacks were allowed to elect their own deacons in the White churches - they later had their own churches. In 1870, the Rev. S.H. Jefferson of Edgefield organized the A.M.E. Church in Pendleton and that first year worship services were held in an old building formerly known as the Odd Fellows Hall. It was located on Vance Street, at the rear of Hunter's Store, and a cemetery was established there. In 1871, a church was built on the same street, eastward and on a higher elevation, and it became known as the "On the Hill Church". The building stood until 1957, when it was replaces with the present brick structure and named King's Chapel A.M.E. Church. Located on Vance Street at the northern end of Broad Street. By: ? o----------o King's Chapel is the Church this cemetery serves, and it is one of the oldest cemeteries in the area. The church raised money to restore the cemetery in 1993. Headstones were given to as many graves as could be identified. The land for the cemetery is believed to have been put aside as early as 1700, when Pendleton was founded, as a burying place for Black people. The oldest headstone in the cemetery is for LUCINDA with a death date of 1854. The land for the church was purchased in 1869. The church was originally a Colored Methodist Church until 1870 whene the congregation joined with the AME Church.
