Take the frontage road in front of the Fireworks Store, this runs into Smith Chapel Road. The Church is only 3-4 miles from the exit. Latitude N 34 30.852 x Longitude W 82 50.911 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ Services are no longer held at this small country church. The church building is being preserved and is used for small weddings at this time. I have a number of ancestors buried here and hope this list will help others in their search. There are several Civil War Veterans buried in this cemetery. o----------o Smith's Chapel 1843 - 1943 Smith's Chapel, that's the name that is on all our tongues today. When was it established and by whom? With this day of celebration we have tried to find out, and hope, before the day is over to find out more of this old church's history. In the early 1800's near where this building stands, a religious man, a layman, Abraham Coffin, and a Methodist preacher, Levi Garrison, started Smith's Chapel Church. In looking into old records available we find that Levi Garrison was located in this Conference in 1806 at a general conference held at Sparta, GA. He came to this neighborhood from Charleston, to recover from yellow fever. He was severely censored for this move, being accused of deserting his post. Abraham Coffin lived near the site of old Broyles' Mill on Beaverdam Creek, and operated a twine mill. When Mr. Coffin moved into this neighborhood, being a very religious man, he asked the aid of the neighbors to help him build a church. As none of them would help, he and Preacher Garrison, his friend, built the church themselves, out of hewn logs. They called it "Independence," because they had been independent in building it. This log house stood several hundred yards south of the present church. The date of the first building is unknown, but presumably was before 1826. In the same year, there is recorded in the Coffin family Bible the death of Mr. Coffin's two year old son who was drowned in the Beaverdam Creek. Descendants of the family assert that this child's grave was the first made in the yard of the newly established church; therefore, we presume that the church was not built any later than 1826. In the old Keowee Quarterly Conference records of 1833, as found in A.M. Chreitzberg's book, Early Methodism, we find Smith's Chapel listed along with Anderson Courthouse, Ebenezer, Mt. Zion, Sharon, Sward's, Wesley Chapel, Shiloh, Snow Hill. Lynn's Bethel, Sandy Springs, Bethesda, Cooper's Chapel, Rhuhama, Siler's Providence, Asbury, Pendleton; 19 in all. Among the preachers in the same record we find Malcolm McPherson presiding elder, and John W. McCall, preacher in charge along with local preachers Levi Garrison, Robert Gaines, R. Shockley, William G. Mullinax, and others. In 1840 the Rev. William M Wightman was presiding elder and John H. Zimmerman preacher in charge at the Conference. The financial list of the Conference churches on the circuit is given as follows: Anderson Courthouse $27.75 Smith's Chapel $16.00 Bethel $6.62 1/2 Bethesda $9.00 Rhuhama $13.25 Asbury Chapel $10.25 Sandy Springs $14.94 Sward's $1.25 Pendleton $13.25 Mount Zion $10.50 Sharon $7.00 Wesley Chapel $6.25 Lynn's $1.00 Siler's $8.25 Providence $21.25 Total $166.56 1/2 The log house was replaced by a frame building, which stood on the lower side of the cemetery. No record has been found as to the time of its building. The preachers for the Keowee Circuit from 1821 were: 1821-John B. Chapple 1822-James Dannelly 1823-Matthew Raiford 1824-John Bigby 1825-John Bigby 1826-Green W. Huckabee 1827-Isaac Baring 1828-Ebenezer Leggett (we know that he was pastor of Anderson's St. John's that year) 1829---Jacob Ozier 1830---Thomas D. Turpin 1831---David Derrick and others, and behind these we still find Levi Garrison in 1833 listed as a local preacher. We know nothing of where he lived. In 1844 a paper, The Highland Sentinel, started by J. P. Reed of Calhoun and later coming to Anderson as the Anderson Gazette, there is a list of the ministers' appointments. Levi Garrison must have still been serving this circuit, because in 1822 Ruhamah Church south of here was organized and dedicated by him in 1836. In Mrs. Vandiver's History of Anderson County, we find that a County Singing Convention was organized in 1869 for all denominations. The sessions of this convention were held with the Belton churches. Lessons in music were conducted by several men, one of them being J. G. Sears of Smith's Chapel. When did Smith's Chapel assume its name from Independence? The story as related by older members of the church is that a young preacher, Fletcher Smith from Walhalla, came here to preach in the seventies and the church was named for him. No biographical sketch of this man is on record, but heresay says that he was retained in the Conference for only a few years because of some difference of opinion in doctrine. If the Conference records are correct as to the church's name, this story is incorrect as it was Smith's Chapel before the seventies. In 1877 the third church, the frame building, was moved to the present site, and renovated. Some of the same lumber of the second house is in the present one, such as the sleepers, under floor, and framing. The old house had a side door on each side, but these were closed with new weatherboarding. With this new church building is the name Smith's Chapel affixed from Independence. Mr. J.M. Broyles, a present member of the church, remembers the overhauling of the church, relating how as a boy of fourteen years he carried boards up a ladder to the men working on top. Then in 1909 the church was covered again and painted. The land for the church was given by Thomas Wells, John C Gantt, and W. L. Broyles. In the diary of W. Alec Dickson we find this notation: Jan. 2, 1878, "J. C. Gantt Esq. has donated an acre of land to Smith's Chapel Methodist Church and also another acre upon which to erect the proposed academy at that place. The Methodists and indeed the community at large are gratified at the re- appointment of Rev. Mr. Phillips to the Shallow Ford Circuit." Also, August 30, 1877: "A series of religious meetings at Smith's Chapel Methodist Church continuing seven days, in which considerable interest was manifested, has just been closed. It is rather remarkable that just seven persons joined the church and that a portion of those desired to be immersed which privilege it will be remembered the Methodist accord to all who desire that mode of baptism, on espousing this doctrine." On of the prominent members of Smith's Chapel was Abraham Coffin. For forty years he was faithful until the time of his death in 1866 at the age of 83. He was superintendent of Smith's Chapel Sunday School in the morning and Double Springs Baptist Church in the afternoon. His remains are in the cemetery here as a pillar to this humble shrine. His family was also loyal even to his great grandchildren, some of whom are here today. His daughter Mary married Jonathan Pickerell and this union produced two daughters, Matilda and Laura. Laura married Edrew Cromer, who was a devoted member of Smith's Chapel, serving her in the capacity of Church School superintendent, musical and song leader. Matilda married John C, Gantt, a power to the church, and also superintendent of the Church School for many years. Out of this church has gone a preacher, the Rev. J. Walter Dickson, who joined this church in 1865. A few years later in this same church made his first exhortation to preach. After his graduation from Wofford College in 1872 he joined the South Carolina Conference, and from 1887 - 1890 for four years was Presiding Elder of this district, then called Greenville District. Other true and loyal members of this church in the 1870s and '80s were Major Cox, Slaon White who was the tune highster, Henry White, Tom Palmer, Andy Graham, Ruby League, Thomas Wells, J. T. Sears, Mrs. Mary A. Broyles, Miss Ann Hembree, Joseph Brown, The Hellers, Snelgroves, Outzs, Cromers, Stevensons, Richardsons, Whittiers, Dalrymples, Kilgares, Stewarts, Bryce and many more. Two notable days of this church were a Sunday School picnic help in 1874 and the District Conference held in 1883. Before the entertainment of the Conference the church was ceiled. The limber was bought by John Gantt who hauled it twenty miles to his home. It was hauled fourteen miles to Anderson to be dressed. John Welsh was hired to ceil the church, but because he didn't put two nails in the face of each end of every plank, he was discharged. Then Mr. Gantt hired the Kays of Hartwell, GA. About this time Mr. Will Snelgrove with the aid of two young girls, Mamie Gantt and Maud Cromer, raised $60.00 for a new organ. The same fall the members bought the present stove for use in the winter services. An old Sunday School record of Smioth's Chapel from 1893 to 1896 lists these teachers: Mrs. M. A. Broyles, W. E. King, W. P. Snelgrove, Mrs. J. B. Hubbard, Miss Maud Cromer, Mrs. W. P. Outzs, and W. A. Dickson. The record for April 9, 1893, fifty years ago, reads as follows: "Religious service conducted by the superintendent. Opening Song "That's Enough for Me" Officers and Teachers present, 6 Scripture lesson-Job 5, 17 - 27 Subject of lesson-Afflictions Sanctified Collection $.35. Weather fair and sandy Song-"There'll be Resting By and By Remarks-Exercises gone through hurriedly on account of preaching at Oak Dale Baptist Church at 11 o'clock A.M. W.E. King Secty. AT this time Rev. J. C. Spann was pastor, These were good days for Smith's Chapel, but as the years came these good people left the community in one way or another to find new homes thereby weakening the strength of the church until in 1912 we have no record of Smith's Chapel's name on the Conference books. For several years no services were held in the church, although some funds were paid to the preacher in charge, as in 1911, $40 was paid, and in 1913, $60. This state continued until 1921 when J. M. Broyles, becoming interested in the old church, aroused the dominant members and the community at large, into re- establishing services. That fall Conference sent Smith's Chapel a young preacher, G. W. Burke, who was a good evangelist and preacher. He enlarged the membership considerably that next summer in a revival. The first Quarterly Conference for 1922-23 was held at Smith's Chapel with A. D. Heller, Presiding Elder, and J. M. Broyles, Secretary. The superintendent of the church school at the time was J. W. Cromer, succeeded by T. M. Wolfe, Joe B. Broyles, and Roy E. Palmer. Our present pastor, Rev. H. A. Whitten, who resides in the parsonage at Westminster, has served us well for three years, and we hope in true Methodism finishes the fourth. By Mrs. Joe Ann Broyles-1943 o----------o Some facts I have been told about Smith's Chapel - Old Independence My father, Rev. J. Walter Dickson, was the son of Capt. Benjamin Franklin Dickson and Matilda J Gantt, who are buried in this church-yard. My grand- mother Matilda Gantt, was the 2nd child of John Woods Gantt and his wife, Jane Mattison Gantt, who with their eldest child, Clarissa E. Gantt, are also buried here; as is their son, John C Gantt and his wife, Matilda Pickerel Gantt and several of their children. John Woods Gantt migrated with his family from below Anderson, S. C. to the Fork section of Anderson Co. about 1836, and settled on a farm near where this church now stands. His home place was afterwards the home of his son, John C. Gantt, who was for many years a pillar of the church. In 1865, my father joined the church here and here a few years later made his first exhortation as a young preacher. After his graduation from Wofford College in 1872, he joined the South Carolina Conference, and from 1887-1890, for four years, was Presiding elder of this District, then called the Greenville District. Anderson District was formed from a part of the old Greenville District. There was no District Parsonage at that time, so our family attended Church and Sunday school at Smith's Chapel. Mrs. Dr. Broyles was my Sunday school teacher. She also was Lady Manager of a Junior Missionary Society, and did much for the children of the church. When my Father died, July 14, 1898, his body was brought to the old home church for burial. I know that the grave yard is a very old hone. I have always been under the impression that some of the graves in it dated back into the late 1700s. Presiding Elders Rev. T.G. Herbert, Sr. 1883-1886 Rev. Walter Dickson 1887-1890 Rev, John O.
