Latitude N x Longitude W CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ Inside 2-foot high stonewall on River Road at Baylor Road, Anderson County, SC. The John B. Clardy Cemetery has one row of five or more graves mostly marked with fieldstones inside the stone wall. It's 33 feet long by 10 feet wide and has a stone wall divider about 10 feet from one end. It was heavily grown over with half-inch diameter trees and cemetery grass (periwinkle) to the point you couldn't see the graves. There were also boxwood shrubs planted inside the wall and a Crape Myrtle tree. Mr. Holder may have been buried there in the 1930s. (Information from Melboree Chambers Elrod on 18 December 2003.) Dorothy Spence Pitts thinks it was the Clardy Family Cemetery. Margarette Swank said John Bardford Clardy, Sr. was her third great grandfather and that his son, Norman S. Clardy (born 1812), is also buried in the cemetery along with Norman's wife, Elizabeth P. Gibbs (28 MAY 1809 -13 APR 1875). We could only read two fieldstones (husband and wife who were first cousins) within the 10 X 10 - foot partition. The cemetery must be cleared off in order to read the other fieldstones. J.C. (John Bradford Clardy, Sr. b. 1768 in Halifax Co, VA) d. 24 DEC 1855 M.N.C. (Mary N. "Polly" Clardy b. 1772 in Nottoway Co. VA) d. 29 SEP 1857 By: Lowry Wilson, 18 DECEMBER 2003 o----------o John Clardy raised a large family -- 5 boys and 5 girls. The oldest boy, Langley, married and moved to Pickens County. Nancy Clardy married William Orr. John Clardy's other boys were Elliott, Wadsworth, Norman, and Joab. He also had five girls, Sallie, who married a Ford; Lucy married a Dalton; Aggie married a Payne; and Polly married a Slatton. John Clardy bought a farm in Anderson County. His farm was near where Bula [Beulah?] Church now stands. The boundary extended eastward from the Anderson Rd. to the Greenville Rd. He purchased 500 acres, the price -- 25 cents per acre. As there was no buildings on his farm, he remained with Benjamin Clardy on Saluda River. He sold this farm to his nephew Benjamin Spearman. It has been known as the Spearman settlement for most of 100 years. It is still owned by some of the family. From "The Clardy History" by Ruth Clardy Rogers June 10,1941, from the Clardy Family Folder, Pendleton, SC. o----------o John Bradford Clardy, Sr.'s middle name was Bradford and not Benjamin (per Margarette Swank & his will). He had 11 children, not 10. He left out the most important boy for Margarette Swank (John Bradford Clardy, Jr.). He's also had 11 kids and was Margarette Swank's 2nd great grandfather. By: Lowry Wilson o----------o Paul: I made computer copies....of 7 of the pictures...this shows you guys were NOT Trespassing....you were on a public road...also, the grave site, to my remembrance, is RIGHT on the Road ditch...there was a white concrete block wall around the one I saw...this was several years ago....David Majors, a cousin took me down there....he is dead now....John Sr and Mary were his uncle and aunt....Sarah (Sally) married James (Jimmy) Fleming and he came from them. Sally was a sister to Mary , John's wife.
