Submitted by: Alexandra Landrum, 12-Feb-2005 o----------o A Short History of David McCurdy Sloan (1753-1826) From the Pendleton South Carolina Messenger dated 18 October 1826: Died Monday, Capt. David Sloan Sr. age 74. Immigrated from Ireland in early youth and engaged in the struggle for independence. From "South Carolina Immigrants 1760 – 1770" Council Journal page 190: passengers of the ship Nancy, Captain Samuel Hannah, from Belfast Ireland, 1767, William Sloan 14, James Sloan 15, David Sloan 12. These young boys were the only passengers of the name Sloan listed on this ship. That leaves us to wonder, were they traveling alone or with friends or relatives with another name? A William Sloan came from Belfast on the Ship Hillsborough, arriving 2/19/1767. He received a grant of 200 acres in Belfast Township, SC, on 2/27/1767. Could this have been an older relative to whom the boys were sent? At the time these people came to South Carolina from Northern Ireland, grants of land were being offered to immigrants from Northern Ireland in an attempt to encourage an influx of Protestants. The article from the Pendleton Messenger regarding Captain Sloan's death indicates that he came from Ireland in early youth, which, while it does not prove that he was the David Sloan who arrived on the ship Nancy, does make it seem quite likely. Whatever his origins, David McCurdy Sloan amassed a large amount of land in both South Carolina and Georgia as witnessed by his will dated 29 October 1821. "… My eldest son David… land whereon he lives on north side of Cane Creek, being 950 acres and 50 acres on south side Cane Creek to include his mill and pond, … To Jesse Stribling and his wife Elizabeth, my eldest daughter … 950 acres on south side Cane Creek … To son David and Jesse Stribling, land on Cane and Richland Creeks, about 340 acres … To Robert Bruce and my daughter Susannah Bruce his wife, land on Toogaloo River and Gum Log Creek in Franklin County, Georgia, about 1250 acres … To son Benjamin Franklin Sloan … five tracts of land on Toogaloo River and Pains Creek in Franklin County, Georgia, being about 1643 acres. To son Thomas M. Sloan … 2000 acres where he now lives purchased from Joseph Taylor on Keowee or Seneca River about five miles from Pendleton. To son William, 2000 acres where I now live." This comes to 9183 acres. The land given to Thomas and to Jesse and Elizabeth Stribling was in South Carolina and so was the land where David and Susannah lived. David's plantation must have been along the Georgia-South Carolina border at or near the Savannah River or the Tugaloo, as their family cemetery had to be moved to make way for the lake. This means he owned more than 6000 acres in South Carolina and 2893 in Georgia. The Toogaloo (Tugaloo) River ran along the eastern border of Franklin County at the South Carolina border. Hart County had not been formed from a southeastern portion of Franklin County when David's will was written. When Hart was established, one of it's "corners" was the mouth of Gum Log Creek on the Savannah River, so the location of the land left to Susannah and Robert Bruce may now lie in Hart County. At their deaths, David and Susannah were buried according to their requests in the family graveyard on the property where they had lived. When the Savannah River was dammed to form Lake Hartwell, their graves and the others located there were moved to the Anderson First Baptist Church cemetery. They, or perhaps I should say we descendants, were lucky in this, as this cemetery is well and respectfully kept, unlike many where graves from the Savannah River Project area were moved. For instance, the graves of their daughter Susannah and her husband Robert Bruce were moved to the New Providence Baptist Churchyard in Hart County Georgia where their graves were desecrated and their gravestones shoved into the woods with a front end loader by a church member who decided to "neaten up" the church grounds. I cannot, at this time, locate the exact boundaries of David McCurdy Sloan's personal plantation but hope to do so in future. It seems quite unlikely that all the lands referred to in his will were contiguous.
