Dunlap, widow of John M. Dunlap State of South Carolina, County of Anderson On this 23 day of November A.D. One Thousand Eight Hundred and Ninety Two personally appeared before a Trial Justice within and for the County and State aforesaid, Martha A. Dunlap aged 71 years a resident of Honea Path in the State of South Carolina who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of John M. Dunlap, deceased, who was the identical person who served under the name of John M. Dunlap as a member in the Company commanded by Captain T.J. Bowman in the Regiment of Georgia Vols. commanded by Col. Stokes in the Cherokee Indian War; that her said husband enlisted at Elbert Co. GA on or about April 1838 and was discharged in June 1838; that he was not otherwise employed in the military or naval service of the United States. That after leaving service, he resided at or near Honea Path, Abbeville Co. 5 years at or near Honea Path Anderson Co. 32 years, at Columbia, SC 3 years. That she was married to him on the 14th day of May 1840 near Honea Path, SC by Rev. Wm. McGee, a Minister of the Gospel under the name of Martha Ann Greer; that he had not been previously married; that she had not been previously married. That her said husband died at Columbia, SC on the 16th day of November 1878 and that she has not since remarried. That she has not heretofore made application for pension; that she has not made application for bounty land; that her husband did not make application for pension; that he did make application for bounty land, the number of his warrant being unknown to her. That she is a citizen of the United States and make this application for the purpose of obtaining a pension under the provisions of the Act approved July 27, 1892 and she hereby appoints H.B. Willson of Washington, D.C. as her true and lawful attorney. That her post office address is Honea Path, County of Anderson, State of South Carolina. Martha A. Dunlap (Signature of Claimant). Shirley aged 78 (?) years residing at Honea Path, SC whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit and who being by me duly sworn say that they have known the said Martha A. Dunlap for 42 years and 60 years respectively; that they were present and saw her sign her name to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe from the appearance of said claimant and from their personal acquaintance with her that she is the identical person she represents herself to be; and they further say that they are fully satisfied that she is the person who was the wife of John M. Dunlap who rendered the service alleged in the above application in the company of Captain Boleman in the regiment of Georgia Vols. in the Cherokee Indian War by the following facts and circumstances: From the fact they lived together as husband and wife up to the death of said John M. Dunlap, dec., for pension No. 2937, Indian Wars Personally came before a trial justice in and for aforesaid County and State, Charles Davis, aged 68 years a citizen of Honea Path, County of Anderson, State of South Carolina, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit who being duly sworn declares in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That he heard John M. Dunlap, dec., say on several occasions that he was a soldier in the Florida War or Cherokee War; also heard Thomas Moore now dead, a reputable citizen of this County say that he and John M. Dunlap were in the Cherokee War together. That he knows the applicant Martha A. Dunlap to be the widow of the above mentioned John M. Dunlap, dec., that she has not married since the death of her late husband John M. Dunlap. And further declares that he has no interest in said case and is not concerned with it's prosecution. Trussell, Trial Justice General Affadavit State of South Carolina, County of Anderson In the matter of Martha A. Dunlap, widow of John M. Dunlap for pension No. 2937 Indian Wars Personally came before a trial justice in and for aforesaid County and State, William F. Dunlap, aged 67 years, a citizen of the town of Belton, County of Anderson, State of South Carolina, well known to be to be reputable and entitled to credit and who being duly sworn, declares in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That being a brother of the said John M. Dunlap, dec., and residing and working on the same farm with him in Elbert County, Georgia in the year 1838, does know of my own personal knowledge that he did enlist as a volunteer in Capt. Bowman's Company about April of that year. That he did render service and was actually engaged with his command in the supervision of the Cherokee disturbance and that he the said John M. Dunlap, dec., was honorably discharged about July of same year. That the applicant above named was the wife of the aforesaid John M. Dunlap, dec., who served as a soldier under Capt. Bowman in the supervision of the Cherokee disturbance in Georgia, as I was present and witnessed the marriage ceremony of the said parties, which was peformed by Rev. Wm. McGee a minister of the gospel on May 14, 1840. That the said John M. Dunlap, dec., was equal health and strength of the average man up to 1876 when his mind gave way and was sent to the Lunatic Asylum in Columbia, SC where he died two years later and that the applicant Martha A. Dunlap has not remarried since the death of her late husband John M. Dunlap, dec. And further declares that he has no interest in said case and is not concerned with it's prosecution. William F. Trussell, Trial Justice South Carolina, Anderson County Personally appeared, Martha A. Dunlap, who being duly sworn on oath says: That her husband John M. Dunlap was about twenty years old when he enlisted as a soldier to suppress the Indians. He was born in Abbeville County of this State, was about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high at time of enlistment, hair dark inclined to curl, eyes small and very black, complexion fair, cheeks rosy, no beard at time of his service in the Army, was farmer by occupation. A land warrant was received by him in 1855 or about that year; as to the number of same I never knew. He sold warrant to Ben. Posey. Sworn to and subscribed before me this 13th day of February A.D. 1893. Martha A. Dunlap J.J. Trussell, Trial Justice General Affadavit South Carolina, County of Anderson In the matter of Martha A. Dunlap, widow of John M. Dunlap, late of Capt Bowman's Co. A, GA Vols. Cherokee Indian War for pension No. 2937. Personally came before a Trial Justice in and for aforesaid County and State, N.A. J. Greer and Martha A. Greer, aged 73 and 73 years, citizens of the town of Honea Path, County of Anderson, State of South Carolina, well known to me as reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declares in relation to aforesaid case, as follows: That they were both present at the marriage of John M. Dunlap to Martha A. Greer, and that they witnessed the same, that the ceremony was performed by Rev. Wm. McGee a Baptist Minister, during the month of May 1840. That they know the applicant in this case whom they saw married, to be the person named above; that she had not been previously married before her marriage with the said John M. Dunlap; that she has not remarried since his death, which occured in the insane asylum at Columbia, SC on the 16th day of Nov 1878. Babcock, M.D., Supt. This is to certify that according to the records of this Asylum, Mr. John M. Dunlap of Anderson County, S.C. was admitted to the institution as a patient Feb 2, 1876 and died here Nov 17, 1878. James W. Babcock, M.D., Superintendent Sworn to before me this 14 January 1893. E.R. Arthur, CCO (Attached to the above letter is a letter dated Nov 18, 1878 from the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum addressed to Martha A. Dunlap: " Dear Madam, it is my painful duty to in form you that your husband died last Saturday night. I trust you have been prepared for this intelligence both by my letter and by your son in law who saw him on Friday. I regret that you did not have the satisfaction of having him with you in last moments, but I assure you he re ceived here every possible attention. Understanding that you wish to have him buried at home, I have sent up his remains by the train this morning. Very respectfully, P.E. Griffin, M.D." June 1906 Special Act, Indian Wars, Widow's Pension, Increase Claimant: Martha A. Dunlap, widow of soldier John M. Dunlap Post office: Honea Path, Anderson County, South Carolina Approved for increase to $12. per month under Special Act dated June 11, 1906 May 10, 1906 House of Representatives, Report No. 3952 Mr. Aiken from the Committee on Pensions submitted the following: Report to accompany H.R. 18378 The Committee on Pensions to whom was referred the bill H.R. 18378 granting an increase of pension to Martha A. Dunlap have considered the same and respectfully report as follows: Martha A. Dunlap of Honea Path, S.C. is the widow of John M. Dunlap, who was a private in Captain Bowman's Company, Georgia Volunteers, from May 16, 1838 to June 23, 1838 in the Cherokee Indian disturbance. The soldier died November 17, 1878 and this claimant who married him May 14, 1840 is now receiving the pension of $8. per month allowed by law to the widows of soldiers of said War. In a sworn petition accompanying this bill, claimant sets forth that she is now 84 years of age, possessed of personal property of the value of $150. and with no income aside from her pension. There are many precedents for the proposed legislation and the passage of this bill is therefore recommended when amended as follows: In line 7 after the word "of" insert "Captain" and in the same line strike out "Regiment". In line 8 before the word "Indian" insert "Cherokee" and in the same line strike out "war" and insert "disturbance". An Act granting an increase of pension to Martha A. Dunlap Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress Assembled; that the Secretary of the Interior be and he is hereby authorized and directed to place on the pension roll subject to the provisions and limitations of the pension laws, the name of Martha A. Dunlap, widow of John M. Dunlap, late of Captain Bowman's Company, Georgia Volunteers, Chrokee Indian disturbance, and pay her a pension at the rate of twelve dollars per month in lieu of that she is now receiving. Approved June 11, 1906. Deposition Case of Martha A. Dunlap On this 23rd day of January 1912, at Honea Path, County of Anderson, State of South Carolina, before a Special Examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared James M. Dunlap, who deposes and says: The late pensioner Martha A. Dunlap was my mother. She was pensioned as the widow of John M. Dunlap and she was pensioned by Special Act. My mother died May 17, 1911 and was in her 90 year. I understand your questions asked me and my answers have been correctly recorded. J.M.
