Captain Henry William McMillan was Worshipful Master, Hope Masonic Lodge, Lodge, South Carolina from 1868 until his death 6 July 1871 He fought in the Mexican War and was trained in the art of soldering by the first class of cadets at the Citadel before they graduated. Mary Adaline McMillan, the 18 year old daughter of Captain Henry William and Sophrona Delilah Faust McMillan, was the first member of this McMillan family to be buried in Shady Rest Cemetery, on 27 June 1856. Seven of the fifteen children of Captain & Mrs. McMillan are buried in this cemetery. It has been said by the old ones, that at the time Mary Adaline McMillan died, Indian Camp Branch was flooded. Captain McMillan claimed that due to the flooded condition, he could not get the body across the stream so that his daughter could be buried in the James McMillan Cemetery. Of Captain & Mrs. McMillan’s eight sons, six fought in the Civil War. Dr. Francis Marion "Barney" McMillan, Captain James Christian "Chris" McMillan and Sergeant Henry Zachary "Big Z" McMillan are buried in Shady Rest Cemetery. Captain William Franklin "Frank" McMillan and Sergeant Carey Columbus McMillan are buried in Old Union Methodist Church Cemetery, near Cope, South Carolina, Orangeburg County, South Carolina Carey Columbus McMillan married the widow of his brother William Franklin McMillan Lieutenant Lawrence Pinkney "Pink" McMillan was killed in the Civil War, in the trenches around Petersburg, Virginia. A tombstone in his memory was placed in Shady Rest Cemtery by Mrs Eleanor McMillan "Jack" Pate McMillan of Denmark, South Carolina and Mrs Sybile McMillan Wall Pierce of Sumter, South Carolina. Two tombstones are in memory of McMillans not buried there: Lieutenant Lawrence Pinkney "Pink" McMillan Mrs. Frances Marion Pate Kirkland Weintraub buried in New Rochelle, New York. There are four graves which are not McMillans. Mrs. Estelle C. Carroll, b. 27 May 1894, d. 23 April 1960, mother-in-law of Emily McMillan Carroll. Her son Harry Carroll, husband of Emily McMillan, is buried in the James McMillan Cemetery. Mrs. Eudocia Gertrude Rice Cutts, b. 24 September 1863, d. 13 May 1942, widow of Claude Sherard Cutts, Sr. She was the sister of Hattie Florine Rice McMillan. Miss Fannie Ophellia Rice, b. 12 November 1861, d. 1 December 1941. She was the sister of Hattie Florine Rice McMillan. Ms. Laura M. McKercher, b. 12 January 1898, d. 3 February 1957. She is not related to the McMillans.
