Go East on SSR 23 about 10 miles to Macedonia Church Road (Co. Road S5-58) (Sign for Williams Chapel Church). Turn left and proceed about 2 miles. Cemetery is on a small hill on the left. There's a brick entry with Shady Rest Cemetery on it. This cemetery was founded in 1856 by Henry W. McMillan, whose home was about a mile farther down the road on the right. The house was removed in the 1980s by family members. The property has since been sold to a timber company. The first person buried was Mary Adaline McMillan, a young daughter who died of a fever. Members of the McMillan family had historically been buried in the James McMillan Cemetery, however the creek was flooded and it was impossible to transport the body over it. So Shady Rest was begun. Another story of its founding has it that Henry W. McMillan had wanted to start his own cemetery for his family and used the excuse of the flooded creek to do so. H.Z.
