It was originally the home of Daniel Rush Matheny. He is buried there along with his wife Fostina Irene Hair Matheny and four of their infant/young children. Daniel Rush Matheny (1853-1917) has a registered patent with the US Patent Office for the cotton-plow, dated April 11, 1882. It is in the Clemson archives. He was a progressive farmer. While he regularly grew cotton, he was also the first to successfully grow rye in the state of South Carolina (Bamberg Herald, May 1909).
