Inscriptions on the Gates as you enter Belle Isle Plantation: Belle Isle Plantation burial place of Gen. Francis Marion the "Swamp Fox." Famous partisan warrior of the American Revolution a native of Berkeley County, South Carolina Born 1732 Died 1795, "Our band is few but true and tried, our leader frame and bold the British soldier trembles when Marion's name is told. Erected By the South Carolina Daughter of the American Revolution and citizens of Charleston and Berkeley Counties. On a plaque at his gravesite. Front South Carolina Frances Marion Brigadier General of S.C. militia during the American Revolution, Francis Marion was on of the partisan leaders British occupation of the states. His elusive disappearances after surprise attacks against superior forces harassed and demoralized the enemy earning him the name, "Swamp Fox." Back Francis Marion's Grave, Francis Marion died Feb 27, 1795 in his 63rd year, and was buried here at Belle Isle Plantation, home of his Brother, Gabriel. His own plantation, Pond Buff, was about 15 miles up river and is now under Lake Marion. He was born in South Carolina, the descendant of French Huguenot emigrants. Dubose, Elizabeth Sacred to the memory of Mrs. Elizabeth Dubose wife of Samuel Dubose Junior who departed this life on the 16th day of June 1809 aged 21 years and one month Dubose, Emma Sacred to the memory of Emma daughter of Theodore S. and Jane S. Dubose who died on the first of August 1833.
