C. NOTE: Adjoining the old cemetery and on a somewhat higher level, is the burial ground of the old Shearith Israel congregation. The introduction of the organ into the new synagogue of Beth Elohim in 1840, divided the congregation into two sections. The orthodox party, having appealed to the law courts in vain, seceded and formed the Shearith Israel congregation. So bitter was the feeling between the two parties, that intercourse between them hardly existed. The seceding section went so far as to purchase their own burial ground. This was walled off from the old cemetery of Beth Elohim. After the re-union of the two congregations in 1866, the cemeteries were likewise united and the dividing wall pulled down. The following are the inscriptions in this portion of the ground: _____________________________________________ To the Memory of MARY JANE, Daughter of David D. and Mary Cohen.
