FRASER/FRASIER FAMILY - OF SCOTLAND AND CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA FRASER - CLAN LOVAT TO AMERICA INTRODUCTION The name of this clan is understood to be derived from the Seignourie of Freseliere in Anjou, and Simon Fraser, who about 1160 gave the Church of Keith to the Abbey of Kelso, was first of the name in Scotland. Udard Fraser established the House of Oliver Castle, by marriage with the sister of Oliver son of Kylvert, w3ho was succeeded by his nephew Adam Fraser. Sir Gilbert Fraser, another son, was Sheriff of Fraquair, and John, the son of Gilbert, was father of two sons, Alexander and Richard, between whose lines nthe cheifship was disputed. Alexander of Cornton, in Stirling, was ancestor of the Frasers of Muchal-in-Mar, of whom Andrew completed the magnificent House of Castle-Fraser in 1617, and was in 1633 created Lord Fraser, which led to a dispute about the cheifship, but the title was confirmed by Statute 1652, and in 1672 Lord Fraser was awarder the chief arms of the family. Charles, Fourth Lord Fraser, was out in 1715 and on his death, whilst 'lurking' in 1716 the peerage expired. Sir Richard Fraser of Touch-Fraser, Sir Gilbert's other grandson, became progenitor of the Frasers of Philorth. His grandson, Sir Alexander of Touch and Cowie, married Lady Mary Bruce, sister of Robert the patriot king. Their grandson, Alexander of Durris and Cowie, acquired in 1375 by marriage with Joanna, daughter of William, Earl of Ross, the Philorth estates in Cuchan, which with the Fortress of Carinbulg, have remained the chief seat of this line. Sir Alexander, 8th of Philorth, founded Fraserburg, where he contemplated a university town. Alexander, 9th of Philorth, married Margaret Abernethy, daughter of the 7th Lord Saltoun, and their son Alexander , 10th of Philorth, suceeded to the Seltoun dignity which was confirmed to him and his heirs by Act of Parliament 1770. His descendant, Alexander Arthur, 19th Lord Saltoun, is present chief of Clan Fraser, his seat being Cairnburg Castle, Aberdeenshire. The Clan Fraser of Lovat in Inverness-shire derives from Hugh Fraser of Lovat and Kinell, whose descent genealogists deduce from Sir John Frasedr, one of the heroes of Bonnockburn, secong son of Sir Andrew Fraser of Touch. William Fraser, 4th of Lovat, A.T. is found as Lord Fraser of Lovat, prior to 1464. Hugh, 3rd Lord Lovat, had a charter settling the sucession upon his male heirs, and the line continued directly to Hugh, 5th Lord, on whose death his daughter Amelia was adjudged Baroness Lovet, to the chagrin of Simon Fraser of Beaufort, the heir male, who ultimately obtained the dignity in 1730, on the Charter of 1539. This Simon, 11th Lord Lovet, notorious in Jacaonite intrigue, and a traitor to both parties was created Duke of Fraser by the Chevalier, but captured and ????? after Culloden. The representation later passed to ??? Fraser of Strichen, who, who, having in 1837 been recognized in Lyon Court as chief of the Clan Fraser of Lovat, ???? Lord Lovat, and in 1857 restore to the old Scot dignity. His great-grandson, Simon,. 15th Lord Fraser of Lovat, is now chief of Clan Fraser of Lovat, his seat being Beaufort Castle Inverness-shire. At this time Simon Fraser was executed by order of Edward 1, in 1306, in the Tower of London, and was suceeded by a younger brother John Fraser. Hugh Fraser, probably a grandson of Sir Simon was made Lord Lovet. He held lands fron the Bishops of Moray, and owned Kennell in Forfarshire. His grandson, Hugh, married Jeannette Fenton, an heiress in the year 1416. Their grandson was Thomas Fraser of Lovet, who died about 1456, leaving a son Hugh, who married Violetta, daughter of Lord Glammis. In 1464 he was made Lord of Parliament and this Scottish Baron was granted Court of Arms as follows: The Lovet Arms - Quarterly first and fourth Az, three cuque foils (or fraziers, strawberry leaves) Ar; second and third Gu - Three antique crowns of Or-- Crest A buck's head ?rased or attired as supporters.
