"Doc" Livingston, 119 died Wednesday of on apparent attack. Livingston worked at the Union Carbide plant until the 1940s when the company learned he was in his 80's and forced him to retire. After that, he became a construction worker and kept working until he was 92. The records indicate he was born in Charleston, S.C. on June 10, 1862, in the midst of the Civil War. Friends say he smoked unfiltered cigarettes and chewed tobacco "And he'd drink anything if it was good." said Inez Caver, his landlady who said she had known him for 35 years. He prayed and sang a lot and was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, friends said. Mrs. Caver said Livingston came to Niagara Falls in 1937 and worked at the Union Carbide plant until the 1940s when the company learned he was in his 80's and forced him to retire. After that, she said, he became a construction worker and kept working until he was 92. He had his own apartment until about three years ago when he moved into a room above Mrs. Caver's restaurant. She said last year he quit taking walks and just sat at the window watching the neighborhood, tapping on the floor with a cane when he wanted a meal. Mrs. Caver said they don't know how he got his nickname or much about his younger days except that he used to tell stories about being a carnival worker, a sailor and a fire-man on a wood-burning locomotive. He has no known relatives, she said. "But we were his family," she said. "I really thought of 'Doc' as family because I'd known him so long. Of course, everybody knew `Doc."' After funeral services on Friday, burial was to be in Riverdale Cemetery.~Buffalo Evening News, 21 Oct 1981. David P. "Doc" Livingston (B. 10 Jun 1862.
