Edgefield County ScArchives Biographies.....Gorman, Joseph Bef. 1753 - Unknown ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/sc/scfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Norma Gorman Wright Norma852Wr@aol.com March 13, 2009, 3:11 pm Author: Norma Gorman Wright Generation II) Joseph Gorman Born Before 1746 estimated, probably in the British Isles, since his father was not recorded in America before 1753. By 1767, Joseph was at least 21 years of age; included on List of Tithables in Pittsylvania County, Virginia; living separately from his father, Christopher, and brother William. Died Sometime after February 3rd, 1788, the last [so far] appearance of Joseph Gorman, signing as witness for Deed of his brother John Gorman, Edgefield Co., South Carolina. Married before 30 March 1773, Elizabeth (UNKNOWN). On 30 March 1773, Joseph and Elizabeth Gorman granted 200 acres on the Savannah River to Jacob Colson in Wilkes County, Georgia. He may have married second, Martha (Unknown). [Speculation by Ngw] 1788 Feby. 03: First record of Martha GORMAN is 1788, February 3, when she signed as witness with Joseph Gorman and Nathaniel Abney in Edgefield Co., S.C. We have not found her designated as wife, of anyone. She may also have been an unmarried sister of Joseph. Children, perhaps at least four, born by 1782, Virginia. No further information. Joseph Gorman was listed in 1782 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, with 6 whites in his household; no slaves. (Page 41, First Census of the U.S.Heads of Families, 1782, 1783.) As the reader can see, information for Joseph Gorman is limited. We have not found names of any of his children; and many GORMANs with parents still unidentified have “Joseph” prominently used in the naming of their children. One of our goals is to learn more of our Joseph Gorman and his descendants. We welcome your participation. Ngw The Story of Joseph Note: “P” is written in the original records, referring to Pittsylvania County, Virginia. “H”, when used, is short for Halifax County, Virginia. Ngw 1767 The first mention of Joseph Gorman was in the list of Tithes for Pittsylvania County, Virginia, taken by John Wimbish, Gent., for the Year 1767, taken in June of that year. This indicates that Joseph was at least 21 years of age. Christopher Gorman and his son William Gorman were also in list of tithables for Pittsylvania County, taken by Thomas Dillard, Jr., a separate district from Joseph. Since he was living separately from his father and brother William, we speculate that Joseph was married and living independently, perhaps older than his brother William. Other names listed in Wimbish’s district of P. County; neighbors of Joseph, were: Pigg, McDaniel, Worsham, Clement, Christian, Nichols, Smith, Polley and Adams Beasley. We find several of these names repeatedly in records concerning our Gorman families. 1767 On 14 July 1767 - Joseph Gorman, Thomas Townsend, John Watson, Jr., John Watson, Shadrack Turner were witnesses to a Deed of Sale from John Loving of Amherst County (Virginia) to Jeremiah Worsham of Pittsylvania County, of 150 acres. (Deed Book 1, p. 33.) [Lucile Payne, Axton, Virginia, to Wayne Cox, 1990.] 1772 In the Pittsylvania County, May Court of 1772, “Booker vs Gormans.” Parham Booker, Plaintiff, filed claim for debt against Joseph and John Gorman “on a Petition.” The defendant Joseph was summoned but did not appear in Court “(altho solemnly called)”. Therefore the Plaintiff proved his demand for Four pounds Current money to be just. Judgment was therefore granted against said defendant Joseph for the same, plus Costs; and as for the other defendant, his brother John Gorman, by consent of Plaintiff Booker, the Petition was Dismissed. At the same Court Session, May 1772: Hezekiah Pigg, Hannah Gorman and Elisha Dennis “came into Court and jointly and severally acknowledged themselves indebted to our Sovereign Lord the King in the sum of Fifty pounds each to be levyed of their respective Goods and Chattels Lands and Tenemints to the use of our said Lord the King his Heirs and _____ on condition that they (---) each of them shall personally be and appear before the Honourable the Court of A_____ Ter_____ at the Capitol in the City of Williamsburg in June next then and there to give testimony against Moses Moss charged with Murder, and that they do not depart thereas without Leave of the said Court.” In other words, they posted bond that they would appear in court in Williamsburg the following month, June, to give testimony for the prosecution against Moses Moss, charged with murder. Hannah was wife of John Gorman. 177? In another instance, James Jones filed as Plaintiff against Joseph Gorman, Defendant, on an Attachment. The Court Ordered that this Attachment be dismissed. 1773 Joseph and Elizabeth Gorman were married some time before March 1773 and owned land in Wilkes County, Georgia; for on March 30, they together granted to Jacob Colson, grantee, 200 acres in Wilkes County, Georgia, on the Savannah River. (Wilkes County, Georgia, Bk A, Deeds & Mortgages Index, Vol. I, 1785-1839. Page 74.) Many entries for Gibson families could indicate possible association of Joseph with members of the Gibson family in Wilkes County. Joseph’s nephew, John Spragins Gorman married Nancy Gibson, sister of John Junr., Henry Gibson, Churchill Gibson and Sarah (Gibson) Tucker. ___________________________________________________________________ Five known children of our known ancestor John GIBSON: (Named in his Will, Campbell Co., Georgia, 1826.) 1) John GIBSON Jr. Born c1780. Died December 1850, Goliad, Texas. married John Spragins GORMAN. _______________________________________________________________________ __ 1774 On May 13, 1774, Christopher Gormer of Pittsylvania County , in Camden Parish, made a Deed of Gift to Joseph Gormer, “son of the said Christopher Gorman” of same, for 5 shillings and for the affection said Christopher has for his son Joseph” of about 50 acres in Pittsylvania County, being part of the tract of land where “the said Christopher Gormer now lives, being bounded by a small spring branch near the Fork of [the] great Bareskin "[Cr?]", thence to Edmund Hodges line.” Signed by Christopher (X his mark) Gormer. Witnesses: Thomas Hodges, Elizabeth (X her mark) Gormon, Mary (G her mark) Gormon. 1774 In May and August Mary Gorman signed documents as witness. We have not learned what Mary’s relationship is to Christopher. She could have been a sister, daughter, or a later wife, since Susannah, wife of Christopher, last signed a document on Oct. 9, 1767 in Pittsylvania County; about 7 years earlier. (Source: Pittsylvania County, Virginia Deed Book 4 (1774- 1778), page 47. The tract is bounded by a white oak in the fork of the road leading to the Courthouse and near his corn field, thence to a small bottom, thence to the old line crossing little Bareskin [Cr?], towards the plantation, Chamberlane's line to a cart path.” Signed John (- I-) Gorman. Mary is unknown. 1775 On January 20, 1775, Articles of Agreement between Marvel Nash and Joseph Gormon witness that Nash lends Gormon 6£ 10 shillings. For security for the money, Gormon gives up the tract of land he now lives on to the said Nash provided Gormon does not pay Nash with interest. If Gorman pays Nash by next Nov. 1, then the above obligation to be void. Signed - Joseph (I his mark) Gorman. Wit - Jesse Robinson, John Pigg. Recorded Jan 27, 1775. Wilkes Co., GG, page 58. 1790 Joseph GORMAN was listed in the First United States Federal Census, in Rockingham Co., North Carolina, page 530. In his household there were one male above 16; one male under 16; and one female. No other free persons; No slaves. A James GORMAN was also listed 1790, Rockingham County. We cannot be certain, without more evidence, that this Joseph is our ‘Uncle’ Joseph. We do know that Joseph and Elizabeth GORMAN must have had descendants. We also have records of certain GORMANs in Georgia and South Carolina who could possibly be those descendants. More research may help us to prove the connections between our families. Following are more records of the Sylvanus GIBSON family, who are NOT known at this time to be related to our own distinguished ancestor, John GIBSON of Warren County, Georgia, and who died 1829 in Campbell County, Georgia. 1790 Dec. 10 Part of Wilkes County, Georgia, was taken to form the new county of Elbert. 1793 Warren County, Georgia’s 20th county, was created December 19, 1793, from parts of the following: Columbia, Hancock, Richmond, and Wilkes Counties.
