Lenoir County, NC - Demise of Asahel Wiggins, 1798 ¤¤¤¤¤¤ Lenoir County The State of North Carolina To John Blocker -- Esquire Greeting Know ye, that we, in confidence of your prudence and fidelity, have appointed you, and by these presents do give unto you full power and Authority in pursuance of an Order of our County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, for the County Aforesaid made in a Cause wherein Doe on the Demise of Asahel Wiggins is Plaintiff against Gersham Wiggins Defendant, at such time & place as you shall think fit, to take upon Oath, upon the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God, the deposition of Martha Shockley touching and concerning what She may know in and about the said Controversy & that you take such deposition in writing & return the same Closed up under your hand & seal to our said Court, to be held for the County Aforesaid on the first Monday in October next, at the Court House in Kinston, together with this writ Witness Winston Caswell Clerk of the said Court, at Kinston the second day of July Anno Dom. 1798. Carolina} Edgefield County } In obediance to and order of Court to me derected from the Court of Lenoir County in No. Carolina - personally appeared before me John Blocker one of the Justices assigned to keep the peace in Said County at my own dwelling house Martha Shockley and made oath on the Holy Evangilist of almighty God, that She this deponent knew George Wiggins who lived at a place Cal'd the Sloop landen on Nuse River and also knew that John Wiggins was all the male heir that the Said George Wiggins had, and that this deponent was well acquanted with John Wiggins at Nuse, and that Some time after the Said John Wiggins Came to this State and was lawfully maried to Elizebeth Arrington by whom he had but one Child which was Asahel Wiggins and that the Said John Wiggins listed in the Service of the United States and that his wife Receved a letter about the year 1777 that the Said John Wiggins died in Charlestown while in the Service ---------- Sworn before me Martha (her x mark) Shockley 20th day of August 1798 John Blocker J.
