I James Adams of this District of Edgefield and State of SC, Planter, being sound of body and mind, knowing that it is appointed for all men to die, and _ touching such worldly Estate as it has pleased God to bless me with in this life. I give & bequeath the same in manner and form following, that is to say, I give to my nephews James C. Adams, Son of John Adams and James Adams son of William Adams my land & Negroes to be equally between them, also all my personal Estate, except five Hundred dollars to my Brother Henry if he should be the longest liver, if not for it to remain in the Estate. also five hundred dollars to my Nephew James Adams son of Amos Adams, also one hundred dollars to my Brother Amos Adams if he should be the longest liver, if not for it to remains in the Estate. I also give to Elizabeth Quattlebaum wife of John Quattlebaum Esqr. five hundred dollars. I also give to each of the under named nephews & nieces one hundred Dollars, Viz: Charles, Aron, Daniel, William Levi, Patsy, Elisabeth, Milly & Polly children of William Adams. Also to the children of John Adams, one hundred dollars each Viz: John and Asa. Also to the children of Charles Adams one hundred dollars each viz: William, Wiley, Frances, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary Ann & Sarah. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 28th of May in the year of our Lord One thousand eight-hundred & fifty and of American independence, seventy third. The following Slaves were listed as valued: One negro may Joe $775; 1 negro man Charles $441. 1 negro woman Harriett and child Manly $375; 1 negro girl Edline $700; 1 negro boy Job $725; 1 negro boy Ramsey $650; 1 negro girl Candace $300. Cash on had was $1803.37 and amount of notes owed the estate totaled $12,538.82. The list of individuals owing notes to the Estate of James Adams reads like a who's who of the area.
