Written: April 5, 1819 Recorded: August 17, 1819 Will of Thomas Coleman [Thomas Jefferson Coleman, Sr.] of Plantation Recess, Edgefield, Edgefield District, South Carolina: “IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I Thomas Coleman of the District of Edgefield and State of South Carolina (planter) being sick and weak in body, but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding. thanks be to God for the same, do make this my last Will and Testament in manner following— 1. To my dear and loveing wife Edney Coleman I land the plantation or tract of Land whereon I now live suppored to contain about Four Hundred and Seventy Five Acres Also all the remaining part of the tract of Land that I purchased of John S. Glascock and known as the Recefs encept what I shall herein Give to my Son in law Lackin [transcriber’s note: given name is ‘Larkin’] Griffin—which said Lands I lend to my beloved Wife until my Son Thomas Jefferson Coleman shall arive at the Age of twenty One Years at which time it is my Will that the said Lands shall be equally divided in to Two Tracts and of them my wife is to make choice of One of them—And when so done-I do further land to her for and dureing the term of her natural / life/ the said One half of the Lands she had made choice of—I also lend to my beloved Wife for and during the term of her Natural life the following Negroes—Viz Mingo Dinah, M[N?]oel, Sarah, Bill and Rubin—Also all my Stock of Horses, Cattle, Sheep and Hogs Household and Kitchen furniture Waggon Shears and plantation Tools—except such as may be thought by my Executors of the Stock to be over and above what is necefsary for the use of the House and plantation & what I will hereafter give to my Son Tho.s. J. Coleman 2. To my Son Thomas Jefferson Coleman I give when he arrives at the age of Twenty One Years the One Half of my present dweling plantation as als the One Half of the remaining part of the tract of Land I purchased of John S. Glascock Known as the recefs—except what I shall hereafter give to my son in law Lackin Griffin—And at the death of my beloved Wife I also give to my said Son the Other Half of my present dweling plantaion and the remaining part of the tract I purchased of John S. Glascock know as the Recefs except what I shall hereafter Give to my Son in Law Lankin Griffin I also Give to my said Son the folking Negroes—Viz Siley-Lotty, Sam; Stepnd Abram, Harrkitt, Becker Winny and Charity One Horse….” [End of Page One] [Start of Page Two] “Will of Thomas Coleman Page 2 “…Valued as One Hundred and fifty Dollars One Good Saddle and Briddle One Bed and furniture and my sett of Blacksmith Tools--- 3d. To my Son in Law Larkin Griffin I give Sixty acres of the tract of Land I purchased of John S. Glascock Known as the recefs Which said Sixty Acres of Land is to be laid of Joining the said Larkin Griffins Land where he now lives— 4th. To my Two Sons in law Joseph Griffin and Larkin Griffin I give my House and lot in the town of Cambridge Known as the Brick House lott and One Negroe fellow Named Peter 5th. All the Amount of the Sales of the Surplus part of Stock is to be appropriated by my Executors toward the Educateing of my Son Thomas Jefferson Coleman 6th. To my two Sons in Law Joseph Grifin and Larkin Griffin. I give all the Bonds Notes and amounts due me and all the remainder of my Estate not herein Disposed of for the exprefs purpose of paying all my Just debts of every Kind and when they have so paid the said debts owing by me that then they Shall Equally divide between them whatever shall remai of said Bonds Notes and Accounts after paying all my debts as aforesaid---- 7th. To my Two Sons in Law Joseph Griffin and Larkin Griffin and my Son Thomas Jefferson Coleman I give at the Death of my beloved wife all the property of every difscreption that I have herein lent to her dureing the term of her Natural life to be equally divided between them except the Lands which I have herein given to my Son Thomas Jefferson Coleman---- 8th. In case of the death of my beloved Wife before my Son Thomas Jefferson Coleman shall arrive at the age of Twenty One Years, it is my Will that my Executors take immediate pofefsion of the Lands I have herein lent her and Keep them for the Benefit of my Son Thomas Jefferson Coleman untill he arrives at the Age of twenty One years. 9th. In case of the death of my Son Thomas Jefferson Coleman before he arrives at the Age or Twenty One Years it is my Will that whatever I have herein given him Shall be equally divided between my Two Sons in Law Joseph and Larkin Griffin. 10th. It is my Will that the Negroes I have given to my son Thomas Jefferson Coleman shall remain in the pofsefsion of my beloved Wife, until my said son shall arrive at the Age of Twenty One Years on condition that she does give such reasonable Hire or part of….” [End of Page Two] [Start of Page Three] “Will of Thomas Coleman Page 3 “…the crop as will be salesfactory to my Executors for the sevorior of said Negroes otherwise my Executors are to hire them out for the benefit of my son-- ----- 11th. I request particularly of my Executors that they will make use of their best endeavours in aid with any beloved to bring my son Thomas Jefferson Coleman up in a good Moral way And to give him as good an education as the Means I have left will Afford, Viz. the Hire of the Negroes given him and the Sales of the Surpolus part of my Stock 12th. And I do nominate constitute and appoint my Sons in Law Joseph Griffin and Lackin Griffin Executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking and makeing Void all and every other Will and testament—at any time heretofore by me made and declare this to be my last Will and Testament---- In witnefs whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this the Fifth day of April in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Nineteen and in the forty third year the Independence of the United States of America.
