Abbeville Dist., South Carolina NEWSPAPER Issue of AUGUST 19, 1846 PROCLAMATION OF THE GOVERNOR Executive Office, Charleston, S.C. Aug. 13, 1846 Information has been received at this Department of a deliberate and atrocious murder having been committed on the body of Thomas SMILEY of Fairfield district on the 7th of August, by one James M. SIMPSON of the same neighborhood, and that the same James M. SIMPSON has absconded. Now know ye that justice may be had, I do hereby offer a reward of One Hundred Dollars for the apprehension and safe delivery of the said James M. SIMPSON in any jail in this State. He is about 6 feet one inch high, light hair, stoops in the shoulder, spare built and has a long beard under his chin and neck; rather inclined to be rude.
