JOSEPH GIBSON was the third son of JACOB GIBSON, Minister of the Gospel, of the Little River Church (of Broad River) which was also known as Gibson's Meeeting House. The family members of JACOB GIBSON are documented in "Materials Towards a History of the Baptists, Vol. II) by Morgan Edwards who traveled through the southern colonies in 1770. Additional children born after that time were noted in Jacob's will of 1784, proved in 1794. The order of children, within gender is the same in Edwards as it is in the Will's order of legatees so it may be assumed the relative birth order is: EDWARDS MATERIALS: THOMAS, JACOB, JOSEPH, DAVID, STEPHEN, BENJAMIN, JUDITH. In the Will, THOMAS is missing but the children are listed in order: JACOB, JOSEPH, DAVID, STEPHEN, ABLE, JAMES, JUDITH, LUCINDA and PRISCILLA. (The will mentions BENJAMIN as other than legatee) Proofs offered that this JOSEPH is indeed the son of the Reverend JACOB GIBSON are: The executor and witnesses were brothers JACOB, DAVID and ABEL The purchase of six slaves by JOSEPH from STEPHEN on 11 March 1789, among them one named Anthony. The sale of one slave (LISHA) by JOSEPH to PETER CURRY on 18 November 1794. This leaves him five slaves which matches one of the JOSEPHs in the 1800 Census. The court case refers to a Mr. NOTT, lawyer for the defendant, the same NOTT mentioned in payments from JOSEPH's Estate "By cash paid AMB. NOTT, Esq for Defending a court in Equality. The court case specifically notes ANTHONY in its findings. The Court case is found in "Cases Argued and Determined in the Court of Chancery of South Carolina" June 1810 - Pages 140-143 - Heard before CHANCELLOR DESAUSSURE, and is the case of "JACOB HARTIN alias GIBSON vs JACOB GIBSON, Sen. and others." This book, almost totally blackened by age and mildew, is in the Archives at Columbia, South Carolina Embedded within the case was the Last Will and Testament of JOSEPH GIBSON [End of Notes] THE WILL OF JOSEPH GIBSON Know all men by these presents, that I, Joseph Gibson, Sen, have made, ordained, constituted, &c.
