J.D. Broadwell

J. Don Broadwell, 62, an extensive farmer and fertilizer dealer of Route 4, 
Florence, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday at his residence of a heart attack. He was 
associated as special agent, with the Virginia-Carolina Fertilizer Co., Swift 
and Company and the Johnson Cotton Company for the past 25 years.

 Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Central Methodist 
Church by Dr. Melvin K. Medlock, pastor and the Rev. Silas H. Garrison, 
assistant pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Mount Hope 
Cemetery.
  
Mr. Broadwell came to Florence County in 1928 and became engaged in the 
trucking and lumber business. He later operated the Muldrow’s Mill Ginning 
Company at Howe’s Spring for a number of years. 
A native of Robeson County, Mr. Broadwell was born February 8, 1897, a son of 
the late Haynes and Alie Carelin Barker Broadwell, pioneer citizens of St. 
Paul, N.C.
 
He was an active member of Central Methodist Church, the Pendergrass Bible 
Class and was a former member of the Board of Stewarts of the Church. 
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. J.D. Broadwell of Florence, formerly Miss Carrie 
Boswell; one son, Joseph Don Broadwell of Florence; one sister, Mrs. M.C. 
Martin and two brothers, F.K. Broadwell and W.D. Broadwell, all of St. Paul, 
N.C. and several nieces and nephews.

Waters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
