Contributed to The USGenWeb Archives by: Jason Smith 21 Jun 1999 ---------------------------------------- This cemetery is abandoned and overgrown in a forest. It is adjacent an old road bed which appears as an unimproved road on the USGS 7.5 Minute Topographic Map entitled "Mauldin, SC-- Provisional Edition 1983." This roadbed comes off from Old Standing Springs Road in Conestee, but is gated off, unnavigable anyway, and remotely lethal to walk down because it traverses directly behind an outdoor gun range (Greenville Gun Club). A better way to access this cemetery is through a new Torrey homes subdivision which abuts the wooded cemetery on the development's northern-most border. The subdivision is named "Bonnie Woods" and is on Ashmore Bridge Road, next to a golf course. As yet the subdivision is incomplete so I cannot give a street address near the graves, which are not fifty yards from the huge, graded site. The graves may be in serious jeapordy from the development. In trying to penetrate the thick woods, I drove down a dirt driveway where I encountered an old man feeding his ducks by a pond. He told me that there was a fifteen-grave cemetery nearby where once some people were starting a church, but the developers of Bonnie Woods bulldozed it within the last six months. He also expressed concern that they may have already shaved off the corner of the cemetery transcribed here. There are orange stakes and markers tied to trees throughout the woods, so more destruction may be imminent. -approximate # of graves: 37 -range of ascertainable birthdates: 1807--1925 -Surnames: ARNOLD COPELAND HUNTER JACKSON POWERS SMITH WHITE YOUNG ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ 20 stone markers, including both rocks and uninscribed headstones 2 metal, temporary markers devoid of info F.M.
