H.Z. Graham Certificate of Parole, 1865 State of South Carolina Adjutant General's Office Columbia CERTIFICATE OF PAROLE May 29th, 1865 Corp. H.Z. Graham of Co "D" 9th Regiment S.C. Bat., having been this day surrendered by Col. S.F. Pressley, Commanding Confederate Forces in the State of S.C. to Col. P.P. Brown, Jr., Commanding United States Forces, in compliance with a Military Convention made on April 26th, 1865, at Bennett's House, near Durham's Station, North Carolina, between General Joseph E. Johnston, of the Confederate Army, and Major General W.T. Sherman, U.S.A., and having given his individual obligation and parole, in writing, not to take up arms against the United States Government, nor to do any act hostile thereto, until properly released from the affect of this obligation in such manner as shall be mutually approved by the respective authorities, he is hereby permitted to return to his home in South Carolina. He will not be disturbed by the United States Authorities so long as he observes his obligations and the laws in force where he may reside. By Order of Brig. Gen. Jno. P. Graham who enlisted in Company D 9th Regiment, South Carolina State Troops in 1864 That she was married to said Soldier before the first day of January 1898 Sworn and subscribed 16 June 1926 - applicant signed the application J.B. Hooks, CSC Also personally appeared H.T. Graham residing in Goldsboro postoffice and Emmett Powell of Goldsboro saying they were acquainted with Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Graham, the widow of the late H.Z.
