Dudley & Co., of Washington, DC, the fee of twenty-five dollars, which shall include all amounts to be paid for any services in the furtherance of said claim; and said fee shall not be demanded by or payable to my said attorneys in whole or in part, except in case of granting my pension by the Commissioner of Pensions; and that the same shall be paid to him in accordance with the provisions of Section 4768 and 4769, of the Revised Statutes, US. INDIAN WAR PENSION, Act of July 27, 1892 DECLARATION OF WIDOW FOR PENSION State of South Carolina, County of Greenville On this 29th day of November, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety four, personally appeared before me, a Trial Justice within and for the County and State aforesaid Pershey Turner, age 77, in the County of Greenville in the State of SC who, being by me first duly sworn according to law, deposes and says: That she is a citizen of the United States and the widow of Jonathan Turner who served under the name of Jonathan Turner as a Private in the company commanded by Captain (blank) is the (blank) regiment of (blank) commanded by (blank) in the Florida Seminole Indian War of 1836. That her husband enlisted at Anderson, SC on or about the 15th of May, AD 1836, for the term of three months, and was honorably discharged (blank) on the (blank) day of 1836. That she was married under the name of Preshey Rhodes to her said husband, by Zedre Westmoreland, J.P on or about the 10th day of November, AD 1836 at Greenville County, in the State of South Carolina. That her said husband died at home in Greenville Co, in the State of SC on the 4th day of March 1858, and that she has not since remarried; that there was never any legal impediment to said marriage. That she is 77 years of age, and that she was born the 10th of March, AD 1817, at Spartanburg, in the State of SC That she has no heretofore made application for pension or bounty-land which said claim is No (blank) That she is not a pension of the United States as the Widow of Jonathan Turner that her late husband received a land warrant which is lost cannot give number under Certificate (blank) at the rate of (eight scratched out) dollars per month. That since the death of her said husband she has resided at the following places to wit: Same home as in l--- years above aforesaid. That she make this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the Act of July 27, 1892. Under date June 22, 1852 General office reported this soldier as having served from 17 February to 6 May 1836 and in addition thirty days travel Please furnish such date as well show complete and active military service including date of arrival ----- ----- from the start of war and final discharge. Pickens of South Carolina Militia reports Johnathan Turner Enrolled February 17, 1836 at Sister’s Ferry for 3 months and discharged May 6th 1836 at Jacksonville E.F. He was paid from February 1st 1836 to May 6th 1836, 3 months and 18 days, including 30 days travel 183 miles to place of rendezvous, and 420 miles from place of discharge home. The company was ordered in the service by Major Gen’l Scott The roll reports 4 members left sick at Tampa, 2 left at Fort Alabama and one left at St. Augustine. No further information on the roll. D. Southern a Trial Justice in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths Harris Pitman age 77 years, a resident of Glassey Mountain Township, in the County of Greenville, and State of South Carolina, whose Post-Office address is Betty Dennis Pitman age 72 years, a resident of Highland Township, in the County of Greenville and State of South Carolina, whose Post-Office address is Highland, well known to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: and that they have been acquainted with Preshey Turner for fifty years or more and that she is the widow of the said Jonathan Turner and that she has never remarried since the death of her husband the said Jonathan Turner we have no means of knowing them to have been legally married only that they lived together as man and wife and I the said Dennis Pittman was present when the said Jonathan Turner died and that he died in the year 1858 and he was a resident of Greenville County from 1850 to 1855 and that I the said Harris Pitman was present at his funeral but not when he died which was in the year 1858 and that I knew him to be a resident of Greenville County from 1850 to 1855 The statements contained in this affidavit were written in our presents and from our oral statements to W. Southern a Trial Justice in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths Preshey Turner aged 77 years, a resident of Glassey Mountain Township, in the County of Greenville, and State of South Carolina, whose Post Office address is Betty, and the above named Claimant well known to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: Says that she is unable to furnish Record of her Marriage to Jonathan Turner is because the Justice of the Peace that married them moved to the West and is dead and that one of the witnesses to the marriage is dead and the other is insane. The affidavit further states that she can if necessary furnish Medical Record of the soldier’s death. As well as I can remember he died of Pneumonia. I do not remember the exact date of his death, but it was some where in the fifties, just before our Civil War. (signed) F.A. J. J. Pickens Company and that he had for Comrades Paton R. Shaw, Elijah Majors, Jackson Howell, William Dickinson, 1st Sgt. and Joshua Holland, Wiley Davis, and Edward Freeman the affidavit further states that she gained her knowledge through what her husband told her after he came back out of said Seminole War. Metts C.C.P in and for the aforesaid County and State South Carolina whose Post Office address is Greenville SC well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit and who being duly sworn, declares that in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: That he is a practicing physician, and has been acquainted with the above named soldier for about 36 or 38 years, and that the said Jonathan Turner died about the or sometime in the year eighteen hundred and fifty eight (1858) and that he was my patient and died I think from pneumonia. A. Stewart age 68 years, a resident of Saluda Township, the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, whose Post-Offfice Address is Millers, Greenville County South Carolina well known to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn , declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That we the said Robert Pitman and the said A.A. Stewart do declare or affirm that they have known the above named Preshey Turner, the widow of Jonathan Turner for forty six years and that they know from personal knowledge that she was never divorced no that she was never remarried affiant state that they know the above facts to be true from personal knowledge having lived near by for a number of years. The said A.A. Stewart states he had lived in about a mile of her most of the above stated 46 years. Affiant further states that they (the said Jonathan Turner and said Preshey Turner) were both members of the Tyger Baptist Church at the time of Jonathan Turners death and that they were recognized as husband and wife. The statement contained in this affidavit were written in my presents and ferm my oral statement to W.D. Southern on the 28th day of January 1896 at Lima SC and that in making the same I have not used and I was not aided or prompted by any written or printed statement prepared or dictated by any other person. Pickens, Fla Vols Seminole War of 1836 On this day 28th January AD 1896, personally appeared before me W. D. Southern, a Magistrate in and for the foresaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths R.P. Pittman aged 78 years, a resident of Glassy Township, in the County of Greenville, and State of South Carolina, whose Post-Office address is Glassey, Betsy Pittman aged 68 years a resident of Glassey Township, in the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, whose Post-Office address is Glassy well known to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: Affiant states that the above soldier had been previously married before he was married to Preshey and he further states that she the first wife is dead I was at the bearing but Preshey was never married before she married the soldier not since. Betsy Pitman says the soldier was married before he married Preshey but she died & I was at the funeral but Preshey was not married until she married Jonathan Turner and has not been married since. The affiants further states that the marriage is in family Bible married June 10th 1839 by Squire Zedie Westmoreland. The statements in this affidavit were written in my presence and form my oral statements to W.D. Southern preparing this affidavit and the oral statements were made to W.D. Southern on the 28th day of January 1896 at Lima SC and that in making the same we have not used and we was not aided or prompted by any one or one other persons. Affiant states that the first wife of Jonathan Turner died before his marriage to Preshey Turner. We further declare that we have no interest in said case and we at not concerned in its persecution. Southern, A Magistrate in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths Preshey Turner aged 78 years, a resident of Glassey Township, in the County of Greenville, and State of South Carolina, whose Post Office address is Betty, well known to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That she knows that the soldiers previous wife was dead before his marriage to her says that she was present when she died and further says that his previous wife was her own sister and that she died before his marrage to her and further states that she was married to the Soldier (Jonathan Turner) on June the 10th day 1837 and that they were married by Zedoe Westmoreland. Esq. and that he afterwards moved to the West and died and that the witnesses to the marriage are dead and as there was no marriage law in this state that she has no way of getting the record evidence except from Bible record which she says as follows Jonathan Turner was married to Preshey Rhodes the 10th of Jun 1837 and that said Bible was published at Philadelphia by R.P. Desilver 255 Market Street. I. Ashmead and Co., Publisher 1836 and bears the marks of age. The statements contained in this affidavit were written in my presence and from my oral statements to W.D. Southern preparing this affidavit and the oral statements were made to W.D. Sir: In response to your letter of the 11th instant you are advised that the records of this Bureau show that pension was granted under Certificate # 4562 to Preshey Turner, widow of Jonathan Turner, who served as a private in Captain Pickens Company, South Carolina Mounted Volunteers, in the Florida Indian War, at the rate of $8 per month from July 27, 1892, to August 4, 1898, because of her reported death. A report from the War Department shows that said soldier was enrolled for service on February 17, 1836, and discharged May 6, 1836. The papers in this case do not disclose anything concerning the soldiers personal history, except that he married the above named pensioner on June 10, 1837, in Greenville County, S.C.
